I have had a letter from the council stating that a mobile phone operator want to install a 12m mobile phone mast next to my house.
Does anybody here have experience or advice in fighting this.

The issues are that 12m metre mast will dominate the view, we do not have any tall trees or buildings. My house is the centre of the view as you drive down the hil, and due to the fall in the land this mast will appear 3 times as high.
I'd appreciate any assitance, I know I sound like a NIMBY, but this really is not in keeping with the local landscape.
(40 yards to the right are a row of 10m conifers which would be better, but the land is privately owned, and wouldnt be free!)

Vodafone tried to install one on a village just down the road, planning permission was immediately refused! I'd say you need to gain as much support from fellow locals as you can, that might be leaflets or even a Facebook page - generally speaking make sure everyone that is opposed to it submit their point to the council and you should be ok.
kit!The sister comapny to the company I work for make mobile phone towers and offer them as tree look-a-likes, they're not bad at all if you don't know they're there. We have one around canary wharf which I've been told most people don't notice (could be stretching the truth!).

Could be a challenge stopping this. No planning permission is required if the mast is <15M high (a law came in in the 90's giving automatic planning permission) but operators seeking to exercise this power are required to apply to the local planning authority for a decision on whether the siting and appearance of the development requires the authority's prior approval.
Within 42 days, during which time a public notice must be displayed at the site, local authorities can reject a proposal if it will have a serious impact on amenity, and operators can appeal against this decision to the Secretary of State.

Good luck with it. I certainly wouldn't want a mast that close to my house. If you want to make measures of EMF before and (if ever) after it's installed, you can order a very accurate and good value for money spectrum analyser from these guys:

They are very reliable and professional and do not wear tin foil hats (which spoils it for everyone).
We have a mast at about 100M and there are 17 masts in total in the town centre where we live. We recently purchased a screening "faraday cage" canopy for our bed which gives me peace of mind.
You may or may not be bothered by the EMF factor.

I'd write to the Vodafone Directors' home addresses (get from CH) and really make a stink! I'd tell them that an estate agent says your house will be reduced in value by £XXX and that you'll be contacting the local media if it goes ahead.
