To be fair, it's a reasonably accurate comment to make. If we look at what kills/injures people as a direct comparison.....

Did you know 4 people are killed each year watering their Christmas Trees, with the Fairy Lights still plugged in......

I'd agree with you - however the main risk with illegal drugs is the absence of any sort of quality controls - you never know what by-products are in the particular batch...

My mother used to go on about drugs but was a very heavy smoker! Drugs just scare the middle classes stiff because they see it as a doorway into some kind of hellish underworld. Perhaps an unconcious projection of many deeply suppressed fears about their own weaknesses and (eventual)deaths. For many people the bourgeois fantasy of quiet, emotion free, neatly manicured suburbs represent a barrier against the real world.

Blah, blah, blah.

More bull***t, rather than a serious and scientific debate over MDMx.

Not only are the doctors comments accurate but the actual risks would be even lower if the drug was legal and quality and dosage were controlled.

However the political response to this is "drug's are dangerous and illegal" despite the fact that they never quantify danger because if you do the logical result is that Ecstasy should be legal.

The "danger" of ecstasy is fairly low given the number of deaths and the fact that millions use it, the health issues associated with ecstasy are pretty much none existent.

However a significant portion of the British population have been told "drug's are dangerous and illegal" all their lives and have a fairly poor understanding of statistics and risk so there is little political benefit is supporting a pro-drugs policy even if for example a majority of the population supported it.

Errrr.....This is SERIOUS debate. I dont think so, looks like 'throwing toys out of the pram' comment because people have good reason to disagree with you.

Being classed as an illegal drug prohibits the amount of study that has/can be carried out on the drug. As such, the scientific community still only have a miniscule amount of study relating to MDMA and its long term effects.

Furthermore, there would have to be numerous new laws introduced if something like Ecstasy were to be legalised.

Ultimately any kind of 'crutch' like a drug of any kind that seperates us from reality is bad for that reason alone. Of course for some people there are issues that correspond to deeply held conditioning where self worth is so low, and self hatred so overwhelming that any chemical is going to be attractive but ultimately self destructive.

Banning drugs is not the issue, but supporting these people is, and the earlier the better. The Government seems to have started to understand this, but is going about it half cocked by offering a form of help, (the right one....I think not) also in half measures.

Alternatively drugs are fun, it is no business of the state what one puts in one's body... and further analysis is really beside the point biggrin

They are never 'fun' when down the line they stop working, along with the organism that they have 'altered.'

Wait a minute. Extasy accounts for 30 deaths a year at the moment because its illegal. How many will it account for if made legal? more surley?

Am I being dim again arn't I

Depends on how many of those 30 die due to impurities.

It also depends on whether use would increase due to decriminalisation, which is arguable.

I think the more accurate message would be, 'Riding on Ecstasy is great'

(for some people, I guess).

It doesn't really surprise me at all that horse riding is statistically more likely to lead to death or serious injury than ecstacy.

It just says a lot to me though about this chav ridden government and it's allies, that they even compare the two as passtimes. I don't give a toss if people want to take drugs, I've done it myself, and I don't really care if people want to ride horses, I've done that too. It's like saying bungee jumping is no more dangerous than lift maintainence. So what?

Alcohol is probably the worst drug in terms of deaths, also smoking is bloody awful deaths wise.

I think the professors use of the statistics is sound; more than 30 deaths a year attributable to horse riding.

E is no safe substance though, carries massive risk. Yet I also remember a statistic from the 90's that claimed in clubber halcyon days, a million e's were popped every weekend.

So 30 deaths in 52 million drug taking episodes? Tiny proportion.

You're much more likely to get injured going out on the piss.

I think this is a case of scientific fact actually provoking the liberal fascists because ummhmmm....drugs are bad m'kay?

Perhaps because being a 'loser' is so painful and because the cause of that state is induced by some of the issues I mentioned above.
Consider what it is like for a kid left to roam the streets at all hours. How does that feel to be so worthless that your parents dont really care enough to recognise that your life has no meaning? Is it any wonder that they are so anti-social?

The stats are no doubt valid but it's as pointless a comparison as comparing hospital MRSA deaths vs traffic accident deaths.
