Is this watch a blip in the Rolex history by common opinion?

I was so pleased to get my name pop up in the waiting list but since I purchased I have heard lots of negative comments......

I respect the opinions of PH users and would ask:

Do you think its a good long term investment?
And am I better off leaving it with the tags and protective stickers intact etc as never worn or wear and enjoy, will enjoying the watch lose the edge on the investment?

I have an original SD and wear and love it!

Fair Point AB

I always wanted a SD but also had my name down for the SDDS, when I saw the price jump up on the SD I found one for a fairly good price and bought it not knowing when the SDDS would come up..... turns out it was a pricey month!!

I always thought I could sell one of them and keep my favourite. So, the SDDS is now only an investment! as the original is just the best watch ever! in my opinion anyhow! So I'm sitting on the SDDS and wonder sell it for more now or best for long term investment..... and how much does the fact it's never been worn or even properly unwrapped affect the re-sale price?

Hmmm.....
Or just forget the dosh and unwrap and test it's strenght by giving it a spell of every day punishment, it has to be the strongest watch ever made!

I don't think that there are many brand new watches, if any, which would constitute a "long term investment." Some stuff might well beat the bank with the interest rates so low over a long period of time, but I think that you'll lose money in the short/medium term on almost any new watch. Stuff like the SD will sell over list only for as long demand exceeds supply. Rolex are very good at controlling supply, but even then I wouldn't expect to be able to turn a profit indefinitely. Only if you were able to buy at list and then move on at a premium soon.

Used watches are a slightly different thing, but again I think that investment is the wrong reason to buy. If it helps to justify the purchase to SWMBO though, then crack on!

Possibly, except you'll have derived no pleasure whatsoever from owning it, and might as well have put the money in gold, property or financial instruments. What's the point?!

Well, safe to say that Rolex think they can beat a recession, having put prices up by 8% last week! I just wonder having seen lots of old SD watches and they are all very expensive! The original SD is now going for 4k what did it retail at when in production? 3.1k? and it's only out of production by months........

Just the Euro effect I'm sure. Plenty of other europeans are also putting their prices up.

The final price of the SD was, I think, £3.6K.

I passed on the Deep Sea. I was first on the list at the AD, went in to see it when I arrived and decided against it.

The UK list price of the 16600 Seadweller is £3980, Rolex have just delivered the latest batch of 'V' series pieces to the stores.
