Mercedes C170 suspension issues!!!
Discussion
Hi Guys,
This is one of my first posts on here so please bear with me!! Im currently having some problems with a Merc C170 whereby, when the steering is turned right on full lock and the owner is slowly reversing down his drive, there is a noise coming from the N/S/F that sounds like the spring is shifting in the strut. It is a bit of a "clonk" but i can say i have not heard anything like this at all.
When i asked a friend to move the vehicle so i could look at it properly it seems like there is a conflict at the actual tire and there seems to be excessive scrubbing. I have checked all the arms and joints etc. and can't seem to find any play anywhere apart from the front bottom arm. I replaced this and checked it but the noise has become considerably WORSE!!! (started doing it all the time, in straight line etc). I have checked for play in the wheel bearing and tie rod arm and again it all looks and feels solid.
I did notice with reference to the tire that when it makes this noise it looks like the wheel is trying to push the tire off the rim, so to rule it out i put the steel spare on that has an identical tire size, the noise was dramatically ruduced but not cured. It may also be worth noting that when you look at the vehicle head on, there seems to be real toe/camber issues with regard to alignment. The owner is certain it has not been hit or kerbed and again i couldn't find anything to suggest a bent component.
I think i have mentioned everything but i may have missed one or two details so if anyone has any ideas please help!! Much appreciated.
Nick
