im at the starting point of a new project an was thinking about putting a red top in my 1979 mini clubman,and was just wondering if anyone on hear has done it. if so whats it like and is it worth it cheers

Power is very good and a lot of poeple have done this change. The only bad thing is that it makes the car a bit front heavy.

I'm in the middle of fitting a 2.0 8v into my trackday mini and in a clubby front it looks like it was meant to be there smile

16vmini is the best source of info and advice, v friendly and put up with my silly questions :P

I did a lot of reading on this a while ago.

If you google it there are loads of people discussing it.

I think that the upshot was: Vtec is better as you don't get crazy torque steer, but I believe they're a bugger to get under a standard bonnet.....

Very subjective as to which is better. The Vauxhalls do suffer more with torque steer, and only an 8v will go in a stock round front. But they are cheaper to buy the parts for and cheaper to go quicker.
And only 1 company does a Vtec conversion that uses stock suspension and brakes (I blieve)
I think you could build a more refined Vtec, but hop over to 16vmini.co.uk and have a look. Several people on there have owned both XE vauxhall and Vtec minis and will be able to offer advice to the differences between the 2.
