Hi all, I have been browsing these fantastic forums for a while now, finally joined!

I went on a ride out today, bit cold but on a great stretch near Hawes - the Ingleton road (B6255) is somewhere that is really hard to beat, it was soooo quiet and the surface is superb.

One that I hadn't been on before is the A684. Also very quiet, this time more in a valley than on the moors. I tried going to Tan Hill, but got briefly stuck on some ice, definitely a no go in winter! (I heard from a local that a snowplough broke down up there the other day!).

Something which I notice far too often are these signs which describe how many bikers that have been injured on the roads such as the ones above - its sad to say, but most of the time, it does actually mean that the road is a great drive!

Anyway, if you are up in these parts, be sure to try the B6255, it is probably my favourite road of all time!

It's a well known local racetrack.

I know folks who were doing wildly illegal speeds up there
back in the 1950s, which took some doing in the vehicles of the day.

I'd also recommend the Ingleton to Dent road, but don't try too hard
on that, because it's gated.

Dent village brew pub strongly recommended. You can get "staff discount"
if you buy the bottled beer by the crate.

Wasnt a snow plough.. You probably saw it if you went past Tan Hill, they have a bright orange cattepiller track rescue thing (dont quite know what it was called) but the land lady, cook and her dog were trying to get back to the cooks house for his medication, where it got stuck and over heated... they had to be resuced by mountain rescue:

I know those roads well, as a former biker. I am planning a trip tomorrow to give my recently aquired S2000 a good thrashing. I cant remember all the the road numbers , just where I'm heading but it's a great route and should be easy to plot on google maps / autoroute

Leave Lowton nr Warrington , heading towards leigh

Westhoughton ,to Rivington ( Rivi Barn popular stop for bikers / walkers)
Right turn after the barn across Belmont heading towards Wheelton (A675)
Into Walton le Dale heading for Hoghton Tower (A674) , right turn at the Boars Head Pub ( Just past Hoghton Tower)
Some nice twisties bringing you to the A59 , head north on that until you see a left turn for Sawley
Some more great twisties leading , eventually to Settle ( Singing Kettle Cafe - recommended stop for Breakfast)
Settle to Hawes using the OP's favourite road, at the end of the road , dont turn right for Hawes centre , turn left and head along the 684 towards Sedbergh and then down the 683 to Kirkby lonsdale ( Devils Bridge) and then onto Caton . Theres a lay-by there , again popular with bikers , but good for an ice cream stop / coffee / slash.
Left turn a mile or so after the lay-by heading for Quernmore and into the troph of Bowland , I always head for a very small village called Whitewell , to stop at the Inn at Whitewell, spectacular views from the rear of the pub , ideal spot for a cold drink before making my way back towards Clitheroe or Ribchester and then back onto the A59 , and just to get home quicker , down the M6 heading south

If you know these roads well, then you will probably know that there will be plod around. I was driving from Lancaster to Caton, saw 2 of em standing in a side road, speed gun in hand (they were on bikes too). Just a heads up to that really.

I did the hawes-sedbergh-kirkby lonsdale route recently (in reverse), very nice surfaces and mix of corners. Good job I know the road though, as there are some very sharp corners in some of the villages between kirkby and sedbergh, would probably catch out even the slowest drivers.

Makes me want to get my MK Indy finished now!

I did my route today as planned , very quiet roads , no sign of plod. Sun out , roof down , VTEC on full chat. Had a 'moment' going into a tight bend , to find Mr Vectra driver coming the other way on the wrong side of the road decided the blind bend was the ideal place to pass a pack of cyclists.

What sort of speeds (outside of built-up areas) were illegal in the (pre-NSL) 1950s?

Best wishes all,
Dave.

Hey Futuo - looking at your posts did you compete on NECCC road rallies in the past? I competed early 70's to mid 80's

I did Ingleton to Hawes yesterday. Phenomenal road, but the bloody chippy was closed when I got there. Great ride though.
