I have recently read a few stories in papers that refer the the persons status on Facebook. i.e. X has recently changed her/his facebook status to single etc. Shock horror eek

Is Facebook now taken as gospel regarding someones status. I mean if I was to set up a Facebook account and say I was married with three children, would everyone think that is true?

So why include it in the story?

It is sadly the truth, what started out as some harmless fun has become a way of life for some people, It's turned into the NEW "Friends Reunited" which is good, but some FB's can't live their life without "Twittering It" on FB for all to see that their life isn't that miserable, when it is. Watch out for the decline when it becomes a "Pay Per use Site". Yep you heard it here first.

facebook is financed by the cia, its an incredibly cheap an efficient way for them to get day to day info on every single one of us.

In 10 years time you wont buy any software from a shop, youll switch your computer on, itll go straight to facebook as your OS where your downloaded "apps" will be your webrowsers, spreadsheets etc.

This is actually true; apparently. Was started with seed money from 'the powers that be' and is now a useful tool as everyone voluntarily hands over there whereabouts, political views, marital staus, holiday plans, etc etc. Best to not hand over any details at all worthy of note.

You are reading the Sun, or the Mail?..

deevlash at his computer today....

BUT actually I think you might have a point. It is a extremely good way to keep an eye on everyones movements, associates and political views. I mean to start off they must have only found out who was dating who at various high schools but now when everyone wants to be on it the data they must be gathering would be very useful. Never trusted it meself and therefore the lizard people will never know what I think about Pop Idol or what a hottie that bloke from Lost is.smile

Which is why I'll never sign up. Not sure I believe the CIA bit, or the other bit, but I still don't like the thought of telling the internet what I'm doing all the time/who my friends are etc. It still kind of pisses me off that there are already loads of photos of me on there, but not much I can do about that.

Oddly, there are those who do indeed treat it as an information exchange system, and indeed the first I found that one of my friends had split up was when the facebook status changed to single........

This is an interesting article that may make the people that feel the need to post every single aspect of their dreary lives on multiple social networking sites think twice....

Good timing for this topic. My wife is working at a primary school just now. Last week they had a presentation from someone (forget exactly who) about child protection, internet chat and 'networking' sites. My wife was so horrified at the potential for ID theft and the potential for Paedophiles to clone accounts that she plans to take down all her networking sites this weekend. Previously she did all that 'XXX is at the beach/library/work/holiday' sh!te.

She also said that a US-led security survey of Facebook before Xmas 2008 revealed around 33,000 known paedophiles to be operating..... Nasty!

Surely you "Twitter" things on Twitter, not Facebook?
You post status updates on Facebook, or something.

Facebook is a nice way for friends to share photos etc. The Mrs and her friends seem to like it, anyway.
I think the lifeblog thing is more suited to Twitter, from what i've heard.

This divorce via Facebook thing is clearly a load of arse. Like the bloke who had an affair on some virtual reality game, and couples who "fall in love" playing World Of Warcraft.
It's just symptomatic of fairly hefty personality / relationship disorders.

Just read it but its fatally flawed as an article.

First of all, if you can sign up to anyone's Twitter (don't use it myself) then of course someone can build a profile on your mutterings. But then he moves on to Facebook and pretends to be an old school friend. Facebook then unlocks a lot of other information.

There's the flaw though - for his profile building to continue he had to deceive the user. If you are going to deceive people, then a Facebook friend is the least of your issues.

The real issue isn't that Facebook is unsafe, but that people should be wary about who they sign up as friends. Guarding your privacy in this case is the same as not telling people your PIN. All that is required is that people learn to do something new as it were.

He also fails to mention that the all important Date Of Birth can be gained by simply wandering down to the Family Records Centre in London where all of this information is available to you free of charge. A visit will also reveal the maiden name of your mother, the names of your children, when and where you got married to, and to whom.

If you want to continue the deception, many companies are using printed html as forms of ID for bills and such like - I mean - how easy is it to knock up a false bank account in Barclays. I could teach my mother how to create a forged html document its that easy.

I can understand that - it's an easy, non-emotional way of letting people know your change in circumstances without making a big deal out of it or having to bring it up in conversation. Some people find that awkward.

Just like they do when they prefix 'blonde' or '36 year old' or 'shopworker' to a statement about a person they are writing a story about.
