How to phone USA mobile/cell phone in UK ?

I'm trying to get hold of a friend over from the USA , he's given me his cell/mobile No. but it seems dead as if the No. is wrong. Should I be adding or subtracting any of the No's ?
The No. is 1201 xxx xxxx , I have tried that & added the USA code 1 (11201 xxx xxxx) & without the one 201 xxx xxxx, any other suggestions ?

Check with your (landline presumably) provider whether international calls are allowed in the first place, it's not automatic with some providers' basic packages.

Call him as if he was still in the US (i.e 001....
