Right, I'm into my 3rd days ownership of the new phone. The protective cover is starting to peel. How long is deemed acceptable to leave the raggy thing on?

If I understand you correctly
About three days at a guess, remove the protector and fit the one that came in the box.

The one it came with seems to generally be for display only, there is often a 'better' one in the box.

Mine is now at 1 year and just about needs replacing.

Try something from www.Zagg.com - they do invisibleSHIELD products that get a good write up (so I've seen). They do all over protection for the handset.

I have one on my Samsung

Actual face is very strong and pretty robust.
Problem with the all over stick-on covers is the edges and joining areas lifting.
Quite easy to peel off and catch on your pocket.

If you're going for the Invisi-shield, the screen protector should be good enough.
