Hopefully you guys can give some info on the do's, don'ts and costs of this particular car.

Coming out of the company car scheme yadh, yadh, yadh.... looking for something slightly more exciting than the repbox yadh, yadh, yadh....

Anyway one of my trader buddies has offered me the following;

01Y Mercedes CLK230k coupe, manual, 90k, 2 owners, FMerc main dealer SH, Leather, electric seats, f & r park, MOT til May, Jasper Blue/grey leather.

Took it for a slightly naughty run last night from his showroom. Drives very well, all the right noises, plenty left on the tyres.

Bad points: It needs a service which is three months overdue, reverse gear seemed a little sticky, the bonnet is chippy some of which have rust and the alloys are very badly corroded which I was surprised about. The bonnet I reckon could be sprayed for about £200.00, the alloys either refurb or a set from Fleabay.

The price......£2950.00

Now the questions are; How much is that service going to be? What might be on the way out in time for the MOT? And if something really big goes (s/charger, gearbox.) would it be so expensive to replace I would just have to chuck it in the bin? (because I can't afford to lose £3k.)

Any help deeply appreciated.thumbup

To paint the bonnet, you will really need to blow over the wings at the same time.
Service will be about £150-£300 indy or name your price at a main dealer.
I've just bought a set of genuine AMG alloys off ebay for £300
Manual kills the value.
Colour combo is good.
Price is very competitive!

Being totally honest, it sounds like a bit of a ropey old hound and manual is a definite no go as these cars do not have a handbrake, as I am sure you noticed!

For not much more, you can have something like this which is far less likely to cause heart ache in the short to long term

FWIW I had a CLK230 S plate for a couple of years a while ago and it was a good car, only did about 20,000 miles in it but did not have any problems.

in my opinion a manual CLK(or most Mercs really) is a faux pas and there are definatly better out there by the sound of it, i got mine just before Christmas and i know i was lucky to get it for the price i did-2001 Y Reg CLK230K auto silver with black leather, 62000 miles with full history and wasnt due a service, the bodywork is immaculate and the only thing im going to change is the wheels. my advice would be look at a few and make what you think is a fair offer, they can only say no, the engines and gearboxes on them are pretty robust the main thing that they seem to suffer from is rust so if there is any i would avoid or make a low offer.
they are good cars though, very relaxing and comfortable to drive with enough power when needed, good luck.

As an aside, if you get your car serviced, try Prestige Car Service just outside of Portsmouth down the A3. www.prestigecarservice.co.uk

If you suspect the gearbox is on its way out, expect it to cost more than a Mondeo gearbox.
