In preparation for removing my gearbox (but not the bellhousing) I have now removed the transmission tunnel cover (had to disconnect handbrake cable to get handbrake lever out of the way)to get access to the gear lever remote control.

I hope this makes sense.... I've removed the nut/bolt connecting the remote to the 'sawn off' gear lever, and also the nut/bolt near the bottom of the 'remote' gear lever. I expected to be able to just lift the remote shaft off of the 'sawn off' gear lever but something is stopping it from coming off. As far as I know the remote shaft is connected to the bellhousing, but I don't think I need to release that end.

What can be holding the remote shaft on to the 'sawn off' gear lever? Or do I just need to apply some brute force?

Thanks.

there is a bolt holding the link rod to the gearbox selector, and a bolt holding the cars gearlever to the link rod, have you also removed the plastic sleeve that is in the bolt hole where the gearlever bolts to the linkrod, its black and sometines difficult to see if its all grubby and greasy, the other end just slides onto a bar supported by the rosejoint on the bellhousing, then should just lift out.

Thanks Clive, your knowledge is appreciated bow. Sleeve, what sleeve? I wondered whether it was some sort of sleeve, but I couldn't see one. I'll have a much closer look now that you've confirmed there is one there.

The whole mechanism is quite sloppy, and this seems like a good time to try and improve it. Do you have any recommendations of what can be changed (and where I can source parts)without breaking the bank?

normally a sloppy gear lever can be down to the plastic sleeve being worn or broken.

I wonder if someone may know the answer to this (I asked it in my 'T5 teaser' thread too).

On my replacement box the holes in the stubby gearlever on the gearbox are both the same diameter which is not large enough for the plastic sleeve, only the bolt. Even the photo of the '99 box from Jon (Chimjunkie) shows the larger diameter hole.

Could this mean that with some even later cars the sleeve was dispensed with and just the bolt is used? Should I drill the gearlever to fit the plastic sleeve or refit the remote without a plastic sleeve?

Any advice from first hand knowledge will be appreciated. Thanks.

from what I understand of it, the boxes look the same so put it in the same oas your original, the plastic sleeve is attatched to your gearlever which goes into the car, this will still fit as tyou need to fit the linkage from your original box.

unless I`m missing something, I`ve only just got up.hehe

Thanks Clive, these pictures may show more clearly what I mean. The first one shows the old box where the top hole is big enough for the plastic sleeve, the second one shows the newer replacement box where the top hole is only big enough for the bolt without a plastic sleeve.

I wondered whether later models dispensed with the plastic sleeve and what would be the advantages/dis-advantages of not having a sleeve?

Original box.

Later box.

ah, see what you mean, on mine the only place I had the sleeve fitted was on the gear lever moount inself, not on the shaft coming out of the box, just had a plain bolt in that position.

Could it be that the top one had worn 'oval' at some time and has been repaired by reaming to a larger dia and then sleeved?
