Rimini- any ideas?

Would be grateful for any advice/links as am planning to take the wife and two kids (both under 3 years old) to the Italian coast somewhere near Rimini but speaking to travel agents has been most unhelpful.
Basically we are looking to fly from Midlands around 16-22 May and flights don't seem to be a problem but we are planning on sharing accommodation with another family of 5 (two adults and three older kids arund 7, 9, 12) who will be driving down to meet us there.
All in all, we are bascially looking for self catering accomodation with at least 4-5 rooms or even two self catering type apartments if needs be but when speaking to various travel people, lots of sucking noises but no actual suggestions.
Any advice would be appreciated.

A group of us on a golf trip stayed in Cesenatico - a few miles north up the coast..
The area was predominantly German and Dutch. Hotels, restaurants, menus etc..
As well as the people.
We went in May.. The whole place was full of cyclists.
Food was fantastic- sea/shell food.. Mmmm.
If I was you, have a look at Google Earth and see the beaches

Well Doneany decent travel agent could sort this out...hes obviously not talked to any good ones....
Have you considered an Agriturismo - rooms or apartments to let on a farm? I have stayed all over Italy in various Agriturismi, and always really enjoyed it. They are usually a few miles inland rather than on the coast though. You can search here :

as an aside....dont go to Rimini...not verry nice...beaches packed..only Italians...maybe not a bad thing..go across to croatian coast...I've heard its very beautiful..probably cheaper and same distance from Switzerland..
Croatia is a fantastic country - the friends we had out there were great people, most of the locals seemed pretty friendly.Weather was great, main roads were about a bazillion times better than what we pass off as main routes in the UK. Although the minor roads were pretty poor.
The drive through to Pula from Italy was breathtaking as well, some amazing scenery.

The tour of Italy (Giro D'Italia) is in May. It's one of the three grand tours, the other two being the Spanish Vuelta and the Tour De France.The area was predominantly German and Dutch. Hotels, restaurants, menus etc..

The Italians love their cycling.
I'd go to Rimini rather than some Spanish resort any day. Let all the English stay at Costa Del Poohole while you go all Italian.
It is very regemented all the beaches, etc, but at least you'll have a place in front of your hotel and there is stuff for the kids to do on the beach front like crazy golf, small activity centers,etc,etc. If your after a place for the family and it has to be around that area then it is worth considering.
Hotels have always been good, along with the staff, food and local shops.
If you see the old boy on his scooter at the main roundabout selling cheap accomodation say hello, hes always helped me out !!
