I have bought a blank car key and would like to make a copy of my original, is there a cutting service that specialises in car keys like BMW, VW etc, or can this be done at any of those walk-in shoe repair and key cutting shops like Timpsons?

Thx

I'm sure people will come on here and tell you its simple and straight forward. I bought two blanks last year and attempted to have it cut a several places (5 in all, I think).

First place couldn’t get the key held securely in place.

Second place said they'd have a go, but only for the "charity box" (worried that they're tricky and messing it up would cost them money if it went wrong)
They cut it but it was way too shallow. I took it back asked them to do it again and they said "yeah, didn’t think it would work out cutters worn out. Let me do it again". Needless to say, that didn’t work...that was one key down.

Third place said they didn’t have the equipment but would if I popped back in two weeks time (this was 200 miles from home, so didn’t bother smile)

Fourth place said they didn’t have the equipment (v.small Timpsons)

Fifth place had the equipment but needed to replace the cutter. Having returned three times to the same store for the same half-wit to tell me the same story each time (failing to recognise me from the previous occasions!), I gave up.

I'm sure its not that difficult but it really felt that because it was a BMW key, they didn’t want to really do it.

If you get it done and its easy, I'd love to know...I still have the second blank.

I spoke to Krypto Security in east london who seem confident they can cut it, he mentioned all the metrics and difficulties around key cutting which made no sense to me, other than, Make sure the blank is the exact shape and size to the original, as they dont give guarantees, but they have not had any failures apparently.

We will see.

Just order one from the dealer. They supply 'valet' keys for most models that come cut and coded to VIN for about £20.
Ideal for a spare.
