I'm currently in the process of finding a new gaff. In the past week or so properties which have been sat on the market for the past few months seem to be getting snapped up for the asking price.

Is it just that time of year or are some people predicting the bottom of the market?

Personally I suspect its a blip and won't last. Bloody irritating though as I refuse to be drawn in to a bidding war.

Halifax reported house prices up 1.6% (or was it 1.9%) in Jan

Probably not, but given the content of the thread is fairly obvious given the title, why even open it?

shout Here we go again biglaugh

Everyone will buy when the prices are low and interest is low but I can see a big repeat in the future only worse due to the massive borrowing that will occur.

Well, there may be something in this.

From my un-trained eye there have been a lot of SOLD boards go up in the past few weeks and the clatter of removal vans in the streets once again. I wouldn't say that prices are on the up, but the market is definitely starting to move a little again, no doubt helped by people asking more realisitic prices and the fact that mortgages have become a lot cheaper.

But I'm sure Noel or someone will come along and say that prices will fall to 1997 levels in a minute......

Friend of mine had 15 properties for sale from January to December last year without a single enquiry. Sold every single one in January, 7 of them above the asking price.

I've certainly noticed more sales boards up, with quite a few sold signs going on, so clearly something is happening in the market place as 6 months ago you couldn't spot an Estate Agent's sale board sign for miles.

I would have thought that rates will only stay low in a deflationary/disinflationary period when house prices etc are falling
Isn't inflation still above target?

I think he's refering to interest rates. Although you are right inflation is still up.

Savings are doing nothing so a lot of people are buying a bigger house or splashing out on cars etc

Been to the auction today and plenty of people there, some of the houses were sold for more than i would have expected by at least 10%. Don't know what that tells you but most houses sold for guide or more.

Exactly the same as my experience in Glasgow a week ago. Whereabouts are you/was the auction?
