Hi all - thinking about getting an F430...probably a very early 2005 manual coupe. I would very much appreciate any help. I have some questions, if I may: -

1. Is there a Ferrari equivalent to a BMW 'M' service when they're new...which they must have had or warranty issues might occurr?
2. I gather the service intervals are 6500 miles or 12 months. What do the services cost? I also hear that the F430 has chains rather than belts so there's no expensive belt change service?? Is there any other expensive maintenance has to be done at certain mileages?
3. Any corrosion issues or other things that often fail or that the dealers won't admit to?
4. Are there any 'must have' options that used car values suffer for if they're not there?
5. Have there been any face lifts or specification/power changes since they were launched in 2005?
6. Are there specialist/friendly insurers out there that give competitive quotes or that do limited mileage policies etc?
7. How many miles is too many/off putting for a 3 year old car? Most of the ones I've seen have between 5000 and 20000 on them. Is 20000 too many?
8. Is there a Ferrari extended warranty scheme that you can buy for cars past their manufacturer's new warranty? If so, any idea what the annual premium would be?
9. Do they go through clutches often, and if so, how much does it cost to replace?

Cheers all,

J.

Nothing much to worry about on the cost side, unless you are replacing ceramic discs.

Ceramics and sports seats, would be desireable options for some - assuming the discs don't need replacing (see above). biggrin

Recommend Chris McGrath (Ward Associates) for insurance. http://www.michaelwardassociates.com/

Hi AL - many thanks...they seem to have lost some of the scary supercar costs that you always associate with cars of this type...particularly with the change from belts to chains! I'm not kidding myself, and assuming services will be £1000 a time from the main agent...but that's fine.

Cheers,
J.

Having a 18,750 mile service (car is 3 years old) done at this moment, £1900 and counting, that's not including a clutch which will be needed soon, warranty is £3,200 for the 4th year.

These guys can help you get a competitive price for servicing, etc... http://www.route324.com/

Don't worry too much about mileage but be sure the purchase price reflects it, as it will be harder to sell in future, when most of your potential buyers will choose a lower mile example. Depends on your budget, how long keeping, planned annual mileage, etc. Garage queens can be much worse, in reality.

Good luck.

1. You're assuming that we know what a BMW M service is, which I dont. Not sure any issues like that for Fezzas.
3. 430 seems quite thankfully free of dodgy parts. There were some minor part recalls early on, which usually get fixed at the service without you particularly knowing about it.
4. Not really, only personal preference. But this been discussed in recent threads; see there for more indepth.
5. Nope. Although later (late 2006+) cars had a 4yr warranty instead of 3yr.
6. You get what you pay for. Can get very cheap quotes on Tesco/Elephant etc, but wouldnt dream of accepting. I chose MichaelWard as mentioned above, and happy with the price.
7. There isnt "too many" in terms of what the car can take, but there is still a stigma in the buyers market surrounding mileage. Only way to judge it is to look at the price differences on various mileage cars for sale.
8. Yes, £3200 per year.
9. Given that I've not heard of a clutch going, I cant say its a regular thing. Obviously it depends on the amount it is tracked. Not sure on replacement cost.

Hi Bebs - that's interesting...I guess the stigma from the F355 belt change has followed on! I remember hearing that it was an engine out job and c.£3-5000!! Myths no doubt! I guess that must not be the case with the 360s then??

2. Service intervals are I think

6k then 18k then every 12k thereafter or annual if falls earlier than mileage

Hi Kryten...The BMW M Service is one which has to be done after the first 1200 miles, where I gather they replace some sort of special factory run-in oil for normal oil. If the other stuff is left in too long it can cause problems, although I don't know what kind. If it isn't done it can invalidate the warranty and it's the first thing people ask when buying a used M car because it can affect values. I'm guessing from your answers that no such thing applies with the Ferraris.

And re the insurance, yes I agree that Elephant etc wouldn't give me much peace of mind. I've phoned Michael Ward and am waiting for a quote. Thanks for your advice.

Where's yours being done? I've been told £2200+VAT for the base cost of 18750 service. But I hadnt properly looked around or haggled.

You're spot on there - too many myths around from people that don't have a clue, never driven one let alone owned one. Even a 355 is no where near £3000-5000 for a belt/service. Its £795 for belts on a 355 yes

I bought a 430 06 F1 with 5k on it last month.

Absolutely love it. Fantastic car, and so far everything on it seems pretty robust. The cabin, gearshift and engine are a major step up from the 360.

Think servicing is annually or every 7.5k.

i was going to get a manual before I tried an F1, so would recommend you do the same. (and i was sold on a manual before this)

Looking out the office at it now and still smiling !

Hi Gordon - sounds like I'm in the same circumstance as you...I'm dead against the F1 gearbox at the moment, but am prepared to be persuaded. Salesman at Gray Paul Edinburgh told me he'd take me out in an F1 and be surprised if I still wanted the manual afterwards. I was assuming it's cos he hasn't got any manuals in stock! But good to know you were a convert...I will keep my mind open.
