535i starter motor.
Discussion
Thinking that I was due another problem with the E39 (it's been about a month since the last one was cured
), sure enough I have a new issue to sort!
It has happened twice now: Start the car, fine, but the starter motor is still engaged as you can hear it 'whirring'
away, if you blip the throttle it does correct itself.
This car does have the 'one touch' key position, so you don't need to hold the key to start it, just flick it all the way round.
I can't decide if is being held on electrically (doesn't realise that the engine has started) or it is just the solenoid sticking.
Any ideas?
Thanks
James

I would say it was the starter that was at fault....
Like you say, if you blip the throttle, the noise goes away. But if the car doesn`t realise the engine has fired, the whirring noise would stay, and probably ruin the starter and the flywheel!
Is the car diesel? Because there have been issues with 6 cylinder starter motors.... but the usual symptom is turning the engine over too slowly, making you think you have a flat battery....
Hope this helps anyway!

It's a V8

I do think it is the solenoid, but before I pull it out (as it's bound to be a pig of a job!) I want to make sure it can't be anything else
