Hybrid vigor (Heterosis) and species

Given that hybrid crosses display seems to offer increased strength in species why is it that closely related species don't interbreed forming a "stronger" species rather than splitting into two distinct branches?

I know. But we are also 95% or something similar to frogs as well, so draw your own conclusions

(Dunno the exact figures, but I remember the variance between ALL species is tiny, just us and chimps is even tinier)
