Hi, just got a puncture on my M3, the tyres are Michelin Pilot Sport 2 @ £330 each... i have seen cheaper Continentals are available. Do i NEED the Michelins or are the Continentals (or Pirelli PZeros) all i need. Im not a trackday user, just hard rd use. Any one able to advise?
Thanks Tom

I like to keep 4 matching tyres on any car, so I would go with what is aklready on the car unless your doing all 4 tyres.

Don't know how much shopping around you have done but you maybe able to get the Michelins cheaper.

Yup, gotta agree - don't mix and match tyres on a performance car. I'd shop around on price as there can be a big difference depending on where you go.

I personally have found Motorsport Wheels pretty good. Not sure if they have a local centre to you but take a look at http://www.mswuk.com. I've found the guys tup north in Leeds are flexible on price. They've saved me a fortune over the years.

I would avoid a mix, michelin seem well regarded as a road tyre. Mine came with cups which are interesting this time of year and I am thinking of a set of pilot sport for next winter

What size are you paying £330 for.

I got a 265/30/19 PS2 for £260 at a Berry Chiswick and could have got the same tyre for £220 from one of the online places.

The Contis ae inferiro. Avoid them. They aquaplane and generally lack grip compared with the Michelins.

I paid £225 each inc VAT for new rears in Jan - PS2's, but my car is on 18's. Did not consider a cheaper tyre.

Another vote for the PS2s. They work well on Z4Ms so there shouldn't be too much difference with a M3.

Just swapped to Contis from PS2's on the rear of my Z4MC, IMO the Contis offer better wet weather all round performance. The PS2's are a better option in the summer, but interesting in winter. Still got PS2's on the front without any mixing issues, they will get swapped soon though.

Falkens are good for the money, £300 a set, but I went from PS2's to them and went straight back to PS2's again, yeah they may have cost 3x as much and no they are not 3x better but the difference was I liked the PS2's, I could feel what was happening, they were more comfy, they were a hell of a lot quieter and they are so much more progressive so I could push on in a way I just didn't dare with the Falkens.

As for the Contis?? I hate them. Had them on my latest M3 when I picked it up, in the wet they are bordering on dangerous imho.
And not much better in the dry.

It is worth looking on ebay, loads of tyres with 6/7mm for £200 a pair.

There is always a manufacture date on a tyre, so as long at they are no more than say 18 months old grab them.

I've got cups on mine and they're awesome - look like cut slicks but unbelievably have half decent wet weather performance!!

Phone up Micheldever tyres - they're normally pretty good. KP tyres in Ewell are also pretty receptive to doing a deal although I think the cups are just expensive from what I've heard!
