O.k then from the time of this post you can tell how long I have been out and how many I have had but I have walked the 3 miles home to sober up inc' getting stopped and searched by th rozzers (thats another thread).

But tonight I had to deal with a proper 'Nu labour' socialist.

I went out and met a few old school mates in the local for a few pints, one of the guys is a bit of a commi' and also his girlfreind was out.

The subject of my recent unemployment arose and I mentioned that I may go back to uni' to study politics, my mates bird who we shall call 'L' and is very nice said I should go to Nottingham (where she goes) but I mentioned I didn't want to live in a city run by car hating commi' socialists, she also asked why I wanted to study politics, to which I replied that I wanted to be able to be completely imcompetent at my job and have no fear of getting sacked and earn shed loads of money, like our prime minister who is frankly a deluded incompetent fool who still has his job despite lies deciet and ignorance.
At this point the bird started looking less agreeable and then started going on about how I was wrong and that Margret Thatcher was to blame for all the UK's problems and that "new" labour (yea she said new labour) were sorting everything out and that they were saving the country.

Frankly I was flabberglasted, how after 12 years of New Labour and 20+ (yes 20+ years) since Maggie was in power can people still be so blinkered as to blame the Tories for the recession?

The funny thing was this bird was not even alive when Margret Thatcher was in power.
I just tried to ignore her after this but she started accusing me of getting my news from the Daily Star and being a facist.

Completely mental, I wondered what causes people to act in this blinkered, way not listening to any other views? then I found out she is actually named after a famous socialist politician and has had it drummed into her since birth that Maggie Thatcher is evil and the route of all problems.

I really didn't know how to deal with this so I just got drunk, but it was still a very eye opening experience.

Given the circumstances you have described this sounds like a perfectly appropriate course of action.
But just out of curiosity, why do you care what your mate's bird thinks?

Fourth paragraph, line two contains your answer.

She is still at university and knows nothing of the world, so believes everything the people around her say.

When everything was going well for Labour, tories said it was Thatcher's legacy, all due to the things she had done in the 80's.

Now it's all gone tits up these same people say it's all Labour's fault.

You can't have your cake and eat it.

You can if you paid for the cake. It was indeed Thatcher's golden economic legacy that BLiar and Brown wasted, and it's their economic incompetence in good times and bad that's put the UK in a weaker position.

It's all Labour's fault.

Ah, students.

I once had a lovely argument with a student (who thought she was a staunch Labour supporter). Once I got out of her the hopes and dreams she had and the life she intended to leave once she left uni, she was a bit shocked to discover she was in fact a Tory. I also asked her the standard 2.2 and 1st class degree question........... I enjoyed that one...

I know plenty of students who know more of the world than some who claim to have been there & done that etc.

The OP goes out, rants about something he has a strong opinion on & gets the hump when someone disagrees. Without being able to sucessfully articulate his case he then gets lashed to make up for it.

There is probably someone on collectivismheads.com saying the same right now smile

IME of students of the leftie pursuasion, there is little point in stating any case, it is no use at all, you just get told that's not a problem it was worse under the Tories. Even when it comes to any sleaze...

I find it goes both ways, the leftie student are just as blinkered as those who are resolutely right wing. The lefties do tend to have a greater aura of smugness IMO while the righties pretend to inhabit a "real world" of their own imagination.

Nail and head. Dogma is dogma, irrespective of who spouts it.

I meet up with my fishing buddy (an American) a couple of times a year and we always have some robust debates about politics. One is left of centre, the other right, and it's always remarkable how much common ground there is between us.

Girls talk rubbish mate, get over it. We just have to find some way of fooling them into voting Tory again. In the mean time, stay drunk.

Sorry, I'm a graduate with no experience of the real world. What's the 2.2 and 1st class degree question?

Could you also supply the last few years' past papers so I can spend a week learning the answers to the questions that crop up every year.

Ta.

My idea is that you should only be able to vote if you pay more than £3K in tax each year. That would be everyone who works or is living off a pension - which is the intent. Basically if you contribute to society you get a say in how it's spent. If you don't? You don't.

You should meet my local socialist, last time I had the misfortune of bumping into him he had become 'computerised', sighed when I told him I ran my own businesses (he did ask!) and then went on to describe his 'holidays' to China, Cuba and Venezuela - of course the guy doesn't work, he believes we should all be supported by the State, and wants the railways renationalised to prevent climate change (a subject he patently knew nothing about).

Best of all he used to be in local government! rolleyes
