Hi I think the adaptive settings stored in my p38s gearbox need to be reset. The engine was rebuilt and gearbox overhauled recently and since the work the gearchange seems to hold on to long and sometimes change up too early. We've had an ecu check and there don't appear to be any faults but can't get near a testbook t4 or find someone who can do it. Is there another way to reset the nvram in the gearbox ecu?

Any help appriciated
Have looked at the faultmate and autologic but can't justify the 600 investment in it especially after dropping 3k on the rebuilt etc

Not sure if it helps, but this chap recieves praise from many of the LR forums for his service and advice.

Obviously he sells the kit (including Faultmate) and would have an interest in making a sale, but may just be able to offer advice as to any way of clearing the data without using Faultmate/Testbook/Rovacom etc

Unplug the ECU (or disconnect the battery) and re-pug. By it's very nature it should relearn how you drive, but it might take a few miles/cycles.

Hi folks,

Thanks for the replies.

I did figure out the problem and have posted here incase anyone else comes across it.

The throttle must not have been adjusted properly; according to the LR service manuals the thottle cable and the throttle pot position are vital for the correct gear change - I adjusted it all as per the documentation.

Took it out and after a few miles the gearchange got better and better until it's almost impercievanle now.

Thanks again

I've been reading such threads recently and that bloke drives me up the wall - every single post is just an advert or him saying it can't be done. Where in many cases people have gone away and sussed it out and then posted the results for others to share and learn from.

Happy to be corrected!

Interestingly, I have similar issues with my P38 - it seems reluctant to change up through the gears from a standing start.

Did mention it in passing to my indy, who said the gearbox needed resetting - which he will do FOC when it goes in for it's next service. If it wasn't FOC, then I might have been more inclined to look deeper at doing it myself.

Not corrected as such fella.
I just kept seeing replies from that vendor effectively trying to steer people away from DIY/low cost solutions. His products are fine, but if you can get at least an insight into whats going on with just the engine for about £30 - whats the harm?
There's a bloke in the states who's sussed out the air suspension ECU and has shared that with the public - which is fantastic.

I've just bought a 4.6 P38 - so I'm going to create a page sharing links and knowlege in the coming weeks and months.

I've bought two of Blackbox's products. The Rovacom Light for when I was running my P38 and more recently the Faultmate Nano for my L322.
Couldn't do without either of them, trips to the dealership are a thing of the past.

It's the same with any tool. A cheap spanner will do the job, but the one time that you really need to lean on it, it will probably bend or break.
Basic faultfinding gear is great for snooping about in your car's ecus, but for proper in-depth diagnosis you're going to need something more sophisticated.

Yer pays yer money....

And I agree with that sentitment entirely - but people do like to explore and learn their ECU's without someone telling them it cant be done etc.
