Silver cachous, how do they make them shiny?

It's some kind of dust that the icing balls are rolled in before the icing gets too dry, not sure what the dust is made of, but I do know that it is banned in California as it does have (very) minute traces of lead in it.

I have a similar question about malteasers. How do they put the chocolate on without making a flat bottom?

Guy at works say they are moulded in 2 pieces and they employ people who polish the seams out (he says you can see the polish marks). I've told him this is bks, but cant give him the correct answer.

I would imagine that they are made like Smarties, which turn out to have their coatings sprayed on whilst they are tumbled in a rotating drum. Interestingly, they have their 'casting marks' polished off in another drum.

Anyway back to cachous, if it was just a small amount of dust how can they be like a mirror?

Maybe it's like Jelly Beans, which they showed on one of those How It's Made programmes on Discovery.

They add a wax to make the coating shine but I can't remember much else.

that's the dumbest advert I've ever encountered. Some old grannies knit each Shreddie individually? then an old duffer tests each one (by eating them) to make sure they're up to standard? Okay... so how do they now get back to the box and onto store shelves? I'd rather not know, thanks.


I know it's an advert but I can't help it if I'm smart enough to notice this error.

i thought they were called silver dragees? [accent over first e].

a dragee applies to any item with a sugar coating, like m&m's, sugared almonds etc. i'd imagine they are produced in the same manner [rotating drum] and have a 2 stage coating of silver colouring then glucose based syrup for the shine. alternatively, they are individually plated and polished by skilled mice.

and they are no longer banned in the US.
