...I am throwing this open to a wider Porsche audience to see if anyone with good technical expertise can help....I have posted the question on 991uk.com but need more insight to what the problem might be.

My original post on 911.uk is in italics with a couple of small alterations. Any help would be much appreciated. Can't get the italics to work so have used >>>>>txt<<<<<

Andy.

>>>>>This is the second time it has happened.

After leaving the car for ten to fourteen days I have started it up and tried to drive off only to find that the rear brakes are "frozen" on. This time it took a good four attempts of revving and letting out the clutch before I could get the car to move. I also tried it in reverse and first and eventually they let go.

Now I never park with the handbrake on. I always leave the car in reverse gear. This time I had had the car washed but had a five minute drive back home so the discs should have been dry.

In future when I park up I will let the car roll to a stop without the brakes being on so I know that the pads/shoes are not engaged. Is there anytng else I can do to stop the pads/shoes sticking to the discs as I really hate to punish the clutch like this when I have to free them.<<<<<

...well I still continue to have this problem it was very severe this morning when I went to check it out for my trip to the I.O.W. tomorrow. I had left the car parked for just over a week.

Even though I had checked that it rolled easily before I left it in reverse gear it was really jammed solid this morning and took six goes of riding the clutch both in reverse and first gear before it would free itself. I really don't understand how they can jam if the car pushes easily when I leave it and I am starting to worry that I will burn out the clutch. I will defintatley go speak with Jaz next week but some answers now would be more than welcome.

I can't remember having this problem before my last service in December...I wonder how much they adjust the hand brake setting when they service the car .....the only thing I can think off is that the handbrake is over adjusted. Do you think it would be better if I left the hand brake on?....I think the only time I can remember such a problem on one of my cars was on one of my early V-dubs....well I suppose the 993 ain't that far removed.....;-)

Madala,

I posted on your other thread. It's not the handbrake, as this operates using old fashioned shoes in a drum that is part of the rear disc. It is the pads sticking to the discs.

run the car with the brakes on for a while to get the pads nice and hot - the moisture on the pad is making them stick to the disks

I have run the car hard to clear the discs of moisture, even used left foot braking while on the throttle to no effect.

What I don't understand is if there is no moisture on the pads to lock the brakes why does it happen? Could it be a small residue of salt that sucks up any moisture in the air and so after a week of being idle locks the brakes.

I am really talking a big lock up here to a degree that I am very worried that I am going to burn out the clutch trying to shift the car. The last trip I did was in appalling conditions with a tremendous amount of salt on the roads but even so other folk with 993's have not complained of a similar problem.

I know my front discs and pads need to be replaced within the next six months and to be honest although I do a run to the I.O.W. every couple of weeks most of that is motorway and so there is really very little braking. I have to say it's been a long time since I have seem my discs a solid silver.

All I know I want a cheaper option than having to have a new clutch which I will have to have if this continues for much longer.

Thanks for your replies.

Andy.

Have you had all the calipers checked for plate lift?

I'm having the exact same problem with mine. It's going in for a service next week so will try and post any info on what the techie finds.

Thanks Goose....I will be taking it to my local Indie early next week for them to have a looksee and I will mention that.

Seems I am not the only one then....I wouldn't mind so much if they were not sticking so badly but it took me SIX goes and really riding the clutch and revving before they would give way......now that ain't good.

Mine lives outside so had assumed it was the damp weather. Also i have not used it much lately. First time it stuck, it had been standing for 2 weeks with the handbrake on and was jammed solid. Now i park with the handbrake off but it still sticks, but not as bad. It's kind of good to know that others are having the same problem, but it's still a problemfrown

My car lives outside too - have the same problem with the rear discs sticking, although they usually unstick as I move off. It sounds pretty bad when they do, but have never had any brake problems beside a few replacement wires on the pad-level warning sensors. Seems like a common problem, in any case.

Hi Madala
This has occasionally happened to mine in the winter months if I havent used it for a while, especially in the really cold weather (and lets face it we havent had weather like we've had lately for a few years!) Also worse if I've been doing a lot of short journeys with not a lot of braking. Never happens in the warmer weather.

If ever it happens, mine always feels ok once I've driven off and my solution has always been to welly the brakes for a bit to make sure all the sts burned off 'em. thumbup

....yes I have had them stick slightly before.....but to have to ride the clutch and gun the engine six times to get them to unlock is pretty damn serious....the expense of a new clutch is something that I do not need this year.

Woaw, sounds like a common problem...I too experienced this 2/3 times these past couple weeks - the weather has been really cold and damp.
Mine is parked outside all the time too, I just dont use the hand brake anymore, and leave it in 1st gear - doesn't stick anymore.

note: when i took my driving license in Canada, I was tought to never use the hand-brake in the winter, and just put it in 1st gear. As long as you dont forget to put it back to netural when starting the engine, you should be fine wink

hence i don't think there is anything wrong with our beloved ones.

My GT2 always does this after a week of not being driven. Don't think it's a big deal, especially since it has a proper engine so I hardly notice the power required to break the seal, hehe

....it is not the engine I am worried about.....

Thrasher....I was told it was best to leave the car in reverse gear as leaving it in first might damage the syncromesh, don't know how true this but it does seem to make sense to use a gear that is less used.

Oups...maybe

To tell you the truth i just remember the instructor telling me to put it in 1st gear, but that was like 15yrs ago, and they definitely didnt have sports cars at the driving school.

In therory I would agree with you, however I believe that as long as the car is not parked on a hill it shouldn't stress the syncro too much (London is fairly flat). But again you might be right.

As soon as the warm weather returns i'll use the handbrake again wink

ps: i should be changing to a 2S soon, 993 of course, and i might not reconduct the "Thrasher" eheheheh

Picked it up yesterday. Seams it's down to a sticking handbrake cable (only on one side). They have given it a clean out as much as possible, but will probably need changing sooner or later. The techie thinks it's down to under use (shameful in know) so hopefully it'll free up a little now i'm using it more.

Just thought I'd bump this one

How did you get on Andy ?
I've had this problem big time
It's defrost plate lift
The stainless plate causes the pads to seize into position

My Calipers are off for a service and repainted
The stones wilds on the front discs are shot
And the handbrake cable has snapped one side.
