On my 400 the water pump outlet is 40mm dia., and the bottom radiator inlet is 35mm. The hoses between match the diameter of their respective connections, and there is a 35mm steel pipe linking the two hoses. Using 2 hoseclips on the 40mm hose around the 35mm pipe ensures that there are no leaks (this is how the car was when I bought it), but it's not perfect. Ideally, the water pump outlet be a 40mm reducing to 35mm 45deg. hose if such a thing exists. Anyone know if they do and what are other cars like? Or failing that, a 35mm hose could be persuaded over the 40mm water pump outlet, but again, not ideal.

I don't have the answer to your specific question but I can tell you that Range Rover classic top and bottom hoses are different diameters at each end which are what I think is on my V8S, possibly cut down slightly.
They are off the car so if you want a pic let me know.

Demon Tweeks do silicone 90oC reducer bends.
Also you could use a 38mm hose, it will strech enough to fit.

Unfortunately what I need is a 45deg. reducing elbow, which they don't appear to do. I'll check with ACT tomorrow - Tim sells all of the Wedge hoses.

5mm difference is quite a lot to take up. It's better to stretch a hose then to compress it, but 5mm is rather a lot to ask it to stretch. If you could get a hose that was half way between the two that would be your best bet, a 1.5" (37mm) hose would be ideal.

Your other option is to have the hose the same size as the pump inlet, and then put an sleeve over the tube to bring it up to the same size. You would only want about 3mm wall thickness though and I think you'd struggle to find hose that big with such thin walls. So a 1.5" 90 would seem to be your best bet.

I think you have your inlets and outlets mixed up, by the way.

As also said you can get 38mm hose's and these fit fine.
Also depends on the lenth, you could get a 45o bend in 35mm then get a 35-40mm stright reducer.

Recently replaced all the hoses on my 400 for silicon. If I remember rightly I changed the 35mm steel pipe for a 38mm alloy one.The 40mm hose will fit fine on the water pump end and 2mm is ok to tighten down. The rad end I got a 38mm to 35mm reducer but used a 90 degree, a 45 would not give the correct angle but a lot of my cooling is non standard now.

Paul,
Tweeks do a 40x32 reducing 45 deg hose - it's one of those Chav type samco hoses.

Thanks all. I've ordered a 35-38 45deg reducer from ACT.
