I nearly bought one the other day, it was also a 2004 (53 plate), with nav, bluetooth auto and an M-Sport with 55k miles on it and it we agreed on £6.5k. But my better half said we needed something bigger so I bought an A6 instead.
Mate of mine went from 2 years in a 330d to 2 years in a 330i and got 26mpg from the petrol and 31mpg from the diesel, so with current prices no more expensive to run either. Plus he had to replace a couple of injectors on the diesel which was not cheap.
