Rental accomodation, Darlington/Richmond area

Hi,
Well it looks like my new job in Darlington starts in a couple of weeks. I am looking for somewhere to rent for myself/wife and young son. (Non smokers, no pets). Thinking about Richmond area, does anyone know any nice 2 or 3 bed properties available either in Richmond or within travelling of Darlo. Not too expensive, but hopefully near a decent school/nursery. Am searching the local agencies etc but you never know there may be a property owner or expert on here with just what we're looking for.

Its a Rich(mond) area. Beautiful countryside and thats means its expensive.
Thats why so many hone grown are leaving the area. They cannot afford to stay in their home towns!

Agree.
Richmond is a lovely place, and I went to that good school when it was a 'proper' Grammar School.

There are some very nice areas on the outskirts of Darlington though.

I had a farm cottage up there for 4 years, and it was low rent too. - Just stumbled across it in a local newspaper.

...and plenty of space for cars.

Richmond is nice but is very close to Catterick Garrison which isn't so nice. Darlo isn't somewhere I would want to live but there are nice places nearby like Hurworth or Aldbrough St John. Or you could be slightly further out to Yarm or Bedale or Barnard Castle, all of which are within a short drive of Darlo.

Thanks Guys, still looking, Hi Gemini, A little slap there I suspect, how are things with you now, its a few years since I saw your moniker, in the days of my Chimaera and you in a little domestic trouble if I remember. Went under the name of sagalout then.......and lived in Cramlington in Northumberland.
Anyway not expecting something for nothing, or "owt for nowt", expect to pay the going rate but at the same time can't afford a palace.

I think you're a bit harsh on Darlo. Ok, there's some crap areas but the west/south-west side of town is quite nice, and the town centre has had a bit of a make over in the last couple of years - it's not that bad a place.

I used to work there and I travelled every day from Leyburn - took me 35 mins so if you don't mind the extra travel time then you can cast the net a bit further afield.

Richmond is an ok place and the schools are pretty good (I went to the secondary school there). Catterick Garrison is only about 4 miles away but isn't a problem really, so don't let that put you off. But if you want cheap rent then that's the place to head for!

Get the D&S (Darlington & Stockton Times) on a Friday (the Dales edition) and have a look through the property section, they always have To Lets in there.

Thank you Claire, TBH only spent an evening in Darlo and whilst it seemed ok, didn't feel like somewhere I wanted to live. having lived out in the wilds for a few years with only a few sheep and stars nearby it was a bit of a culture shock although after Cramlington (big new town) I would get used to it. Suffice is to say, we would prefer rural or village and Richmond seems to have a decent school, as does Cotherstone, Brompton and Morton (all pricy). Thought Leyburn would be too far but 35 mins is ok. Hamsterley has good School too it seems.
Anyway need to get down there and look around a bit to decide but posted this in case any PHer was into renting out property and had something suitable on their books, may as well keep it within the "family".

Cotherstone has some rather nice cheese and you could eat out at the Crown at Romaldkirk

The area around Barnard Castle is rather nice as you will be finding out.
Villages around Piercebridge appear more reasonable and of course offer good travelling to Darlo

The west of Darlo is much better than the average in appearance, from driving through a few times.

Amazed to see I am still remembered. Your fleet seems to have improved, think it was the Citroen or the Escort when I was last in the area (2003/4) Love the Renault Spider.
Not back 'til a couple of weeks time.
Cotherstone also has a good school which is a high priority however Romaldkirk and Cotherstone areas as expensive as RICHmond.
Will be B&Bing at the inlaws in Washington for a couple of weeks 'til we decide upon the spot where we want to rent. Then we can decide at leisure where we will buy. It's a big decision to come back south and not taken lightly as we love Skye, the scenery is spectacular, the people are so friendly, the roads are so traffic free, the midgies...are well midgies. But this is a little bit due to the blasted Credit Crunch stuff, the money in the bank is now dwindling rather than gaining interest and I am worried that in 3 or 4 years time there won't be any left. Also there is little work up here, even less than in the NE & Yorks areas.
Oh, and when I say expensive, I know there are a lot of not too expensive places everywhere, but what I want is somewhere "nice" but don't need stables, menages, jacuzzi baths etc etc.
Currently considering the above areas, like Richmond and Cotherstone,and Wolsingham, Hamsterley areas too. Leyburn seems too far out as is Reeth.

Reeth might be a bit of a drive but the road down to richmond is awesome!

Darlington is a sthole though

You seriously want to be looking at Yarm. I use to live there and still have a house there that I rent out.

Some great schools and only 15 mins from Darlington.
