How do I find out who owns a house?

As above really, seen a derelict house that the wife and I both like, and would like to contact whoever owns it - don't know where to start though.

It's all overgrown, difficult to even get to front door, so a letter throught the box is unlikely to be picked up anyway.

Get on to the council assuming you know the address?

possibly the local council or land registery

does the house have any neighbouring properties? you could try asking if there is in case someone knows the owners.

There is one near us - in the middle of nowhere - doesn't even seem to have vehicular access. Locals were able to tell us who owned it - in this case why it is empty would put most off.

Well that was a wasted £6

The bungalow is pretty much covered by trees/weeds/ivy, needs a new roof, new windows, probably has damp, needs a rewire, central heating, basically needs to be rebuilt.

After checking the register, the previous owner paid £265,000 for it in March 2008!

I'd not even consider paying half that! Crazy world we live in, I assume it's a property developer who's bought it and now sitting on it.

True but it will tell you when it was last sold and for how much, which in thei instance would have been all the OP needed to know to work out it was a no goer.

Didn't even contemplate it being THAT expensive!

It's not even on a really nice road, just an 'okay' one.

We'd looked at a house (semi) in better condition last week with a 300 ft garden, loads of potential to extend for £109,000.

I can't understand how anyone would have paid 1/4 million for it? It's got a nice shape garden, decent size.

As I said, only a developer could make use of it, assuming they owned various properties next door and behind.
