Want to buy a newer RR help
Discussion
I have had my P38 for about 7 years and it is time for an upgrade
So I am looking for something '04 to '06 and I cant decide between the 4.4 or the 4.2s
is the supercharged loads better ?
there are loads of 4.4's to choose from but the 4.2 is a little more difficult to find
What is the difference in fuel economy between the two cars. I will LPG convert anyway or get one with a conversion.
any other useful hints about reliability and common faults would be useful
I know the P38 inside out now so it will be learning curve all over again
Thanks

Nevyn,
Go for the 4.2S/C. It has of course the newer Jaguar engine, more importantly it is coupled to the ZF 6 speed auto gearbox. A far better piece of kit all round as it has been tweaked with newer interior features (better cabin ventilation, trim etc.).
Nothing to look really as the main Achilles heal(front diffs failing) is no a recall item. Just make sure it looks mint and drives beautifully, has a FLRSH and all the gadgets and gizmos work fine.
The 4.2S/C are quite rare and desirable at the moment.

Having recently bought a late 05 RR S/C and converted it to LPG I suggest you consider the 4.4 carefully if LPG is important. Generally the 4.4's cost less to buy and are far simpler/less costly to convert to LPG.
Please don't think that your local LPG converter will be able to set up the engine management system for the RR S/C. It is a highly complex and time consuming job. You're welcome to PM if you want more information.

Having run an early L322 4.4 for a couple of years and now owning a 4.2s/c for over a year, I would say go for the s/c. Mine is the revamped model with different interior/suspension/electric handbreak etc. To my mind this car is what the L322 should always have been.
Had lots of problems with my first RR, namely front diff/prop shaft, front n/s suspension strutt, various electrical problems, albeit covered by the LR warranty and extended LR warranty, the car was forever in and out of the garage.
The s/c is far easier to drive with the better gearbox, rarely do I put it in sport mode, fuel consumption is about the same. Also has more toys touch screen satnav, DVD play woth screens in headrests.
