Oktoberfest for a stag. What's the best way to do it?

Helping organise a stag do on the 19-20 Sep this year.
Oktoberfest is a very popular option, but, having spoken a few 'fest veterans, opinions are divided over the best way to play it.
Do we need to book in advance? If so, which tent? Are any weekends better than others? Are german birds really as dirty as their grumble flicks would suggest? Basically, any hints and tips gratefully received. Cheers.

I think it is the middle weekend when all the Italians turn up, its not really a problem but it makes the place even busier. My advice would be to book at least a couple of months in advance if you want to camp to get a decent site. If you can afford it then I would really recomend booking in to a hotel or hostel.
When I went it rained non stop, we were camping and there were ques for over an hour for the showers. Often you can only get a seat outside and it is not nice getting back cold, drunk and soaked then having to climb into a cold, muddy tent.
Absolutely awsome though. One of the best weekends of my life!

I might provide a shower service to any PHers neeeding it. My flat is a 15min U-Bahn ride from the site.
As per previous posters tho, make sure you book your place in the tents, otherwise you wont get in. Outside doesnt seem to matter as much IF you can get a seat.
Oh, and avoid the Hofbrauhaus tent if your wearing udnerwear. The aussies like to remove it from the wearer without asking politely.

Many moons ago, the O/H and me went to see the tiger factory (when it was near Charlton FC) Jim (?) took me out, and FFS, I nearly had die poopen in die hosen!!
Would have loved to done an Oktoberfest, although I did put a fair few away when I Lived in Aachen for 3 months (as a student)

I bought mine used off a guy in Edinborough. We went out in it, pootling around and then he just turned to me and said "im going to sell it to you now".LP - nice pic of your Tiger

foot to the floor, it was an amazing sound and the acceleration was immence. 2 hours later she was mine.
Im hoping to bring her out to germany in the spring to wind up the natives

I went once. I mamaged to get enough time off work, so went for the last day. Got there mid afternoon, had a few beers, went back to bed for a short while before the evening session...
...woke up at 10h45, by the time I got there it was all shut. Epic fail, as others would say!
Oh, and they still have C&A in Munich. And the C&A sells all the lederhosen you ever need. And those rather lovely female traditional costume as well. Although comming back with on of these, saying "I'd like you to wear this darling" might not go down too well.
it is great fun, but dont forget the beer halls in Munich too. And the Deutches museum. And the BMW museum. And Dachau. Very sobering...

Go for the hardcore option, be up and there at opening time either 9 or 10 I think. Then you should be able to find a table. To be honest after a few litres of truly good beer you wont care/notice if you are inside or outside.Other usefull hints: Tip the waitresses well. They do a bloody hard job and will remember if you don't!
Bring a few small bottles of Jaggermeister, great for warming you up later on.

I'm going this year again - bloody awesome day out (or 3/4) !!
Book flights up as quickly as possible, don't know where abouts you are but Aerlingus are just about to start flying out of Gatwick. Booked mine last week.
Get accomodation soon as well - found a cheapish hotel near the main station which I have reserved, most hotels seem to want 100 quid a night but this ones about 50.

I went last year and would definately be booking accomodation now. If you just want a basic room then I can recommend a hostel which is not too far away. We went on the last weekend of the event and did`nt book any tables in tents at all - we just turned up and to be honest on one night gate crashed a private party (but they were very welcoming!). In fact, everyone makes you welcome even if you share one end of a table with some locals. If I remember correctly if you do book a table in a tent, the reservation is only for some of the day and then at something like 18:00 you have to give it up. But - I'll raise you half a roast chicken.I woke up in a U-Bahn station after my "Day Out" at the Oktoberfest. A colleague ended up in Regensburg after getting the wrong train at the Hauptbahnhoff.

The other method when it gets late is to ask nicely and most people at the tables will order drinks on your behalf.For booking tickets, i seem to remember if you go to the websites of the main brewerys there are links from there
