Can an 84 944 lux run on unleaded? I've done a bit of a search and can't find a definitive answer.

I'm off to look at a 2.5 lux tomorrow for use as an everyday car... is there anything specific to the model I need to look for?

Thanks,

Mark

I run an 84 Lux and fill it up with super. To the best of my understanding all 944s can run unleaded ie have the nesesary hardend valve seats as standard, but you would need to adjust the ignition timing to cope with the lower octane level of regular unleaded.

Yep, i would concur with that, thats what i was informed when i ran one very briefly (924S can use regular unleaded i believe though)

The 163bhp 1984-87 944 8V has a higher compression than the 160bhp 924S or 1988 944 8V and must run 97 or 98 octane fuel, therefore you should fill up on super unleaded.

You can easily switch the ecu to retard the ignition a preset amount but unfortunately thiswill result in a loss of performance, so if you long term objective is to run regular unleaded I suggest that you have the DME properly remapped. The good news is that we usually get more power once done even on regular fuel.

Thanks for all the advice on unleaded. Bought the 944, can't wait to pick it up next week.
