Hi al
My wife has a 2001 Passat Estate V6 4 Motion. When I last had it serviced the local garage said there was a slight oil leak from the rear diff. They said it will be a main dealer job to repair - can anyone hazard a guess to the cause of the oil leak or if this is a common problem with the 4 motion 4 wheel drive system? Some insight would be useful before I take it to the dealer and get bent over...
Thanks in advance.

Here's a link which explains the workings of the Haldex four-wheel-drive system:

It might help to explain where the oil is leaking from on your VW.

your 2001 Passat 4 motion is not the Haldex system, this system only came on line with the new transvers engined Passat. Your passat has an inline engine the same as the A4/A6 and has the same quattro system. Regarding leaking rear dif if it's just a bit damp don't worry to much, my old Ur quattro was like that for years......... or if it's worse than that I would have it looked at.
Hope this helps.
