Following on from the 'cycling czar' thread and whether some people could walk/cycle to work instead of driving, where I work we have some classics.

Best of which is a woman whose house I drive past in the mornings as she's getting the car out of the garage.

You can actually see the workplace from her house so one morning I set the trip meter as I passed...

2/10ths of a mile!

She is not disabled.

I 'could' ride to work. 7.5 miles each way. Problem is i'd arrive sweaty and feel manky for the rest of the day, as well as smell. Not ideal...
If I lived less than a mile, I would probably walk everyday, weather permitting.

I drive to work most of the time this time of year due to little confidence that the weather will hold out. Odo tells me its 1.1 miles.

That you know of. Could be any number of things from a faulty heart, to actual laziness. I would be extremely surprised if someone couldn't be bothered to walk such a short distance due to being lazy - weather permitting of course.

She's a bh, I'd love to live that close to work, I'd have a Cerb on the drive in a second if that was the case!

I'm uber lazy, I drive to work all of 1.2 miles and back. I could walk or cycle as there are shower facilties. I'd also walk/cycle along a very picturesque bridle way to work & back.

However, I pay a st load in tax to save the planet so I'm going to damn well get value for my money. Also come the end of the day I want to get home and driving is quicker.

Nope, she does occasionally walk only when the car is being used by someone else.
I've pointed out what damage it's doing to the engine and she doesn't seem in the least bit bothered.

my mate's mum drives to work from the top of a hill to the bottom of it. its all of 0.5miles, but she hates walking up the hill!

22miles each way for me so I justify the car, though I know someone who cycles more than that no matter what the weather.

I used to cycle to work (not working at the mo) which was c10 miles each way along mostly flat roads (Central London). Work had showers and I felt fresher getting off the bike that I did getting off a train/bus/tube.

Driving was a rare treat but was usually just too busy. A cycle is a great idea in London but with the way most people drive, I'd be wary of cycling in less built up areas.

How much longer would it take her to walk than drive? She may also take the kids to school or something at the same time? She may just not like walking - is she incredibly fat?

Not particularly fat, and her 'kids' would now have their own kids, I could probably walk it in the time it takes her to get the car out and lock the garage.

It is now taboo to suggest someone might consider walking a mile or two rather than drive it. And then people wonder why the average Brit is getting fatter...

My cul de sac is 200ft long, my next door neighbour drives to the top of the street to collect his kids from the school bus.

I could cycle to work, but we have no showers at work and I certainly wouldn't cycle in my suit so I would have to take a change of clothes, too much faffing about and with the British weather, the risk of getting piss wet through, make up and hair ruined. Just not worth the hassle.

I cycle to and from work, 7.5 miles each way. We don't have showers at work either so I joined a gym near work.

It's much, much quicker than driving plus I'm now a lot fitter. And as if those 2 facts weren't clinchers it means that now when I drive it's generally for fun purposes.

I can't stand the thought of having to commute in a car.
