Good Evening Chaps

I Wondered if you can help me.

5/6 years ago my uncle bought some tapes by Andre Passebecq. French Dr. They are to help you stop smoking. Now the idea is you listen to a certain thing everytime you have a cigarette and then onc a day listen to a 10 minute relxation peice. It worked on my uncle and was obvious from the first day. He was a 60 a day smoker and cut to down to 25 on the first day and by the 7th was smoke free.

Now I step up to the plate. Day 1 I am already on half my daily intake. Day 2, 1 less than yesterday but now to 9 instead of 20. Great, but question is are they safe? The noise is like a strange set of filters. I think that it raises the heart rate so you no longer associate smoking with relaxation. So far so that my heart level raised so much I felt like I was having a panic attack?

Do any of you know how this works? You don't even need to want to give up apparently and to be fair I don't and yet I am already down by half.

I was sceptical but seeing as it worked for my uncle and my mother it seemed stupid not to give it a whirl

Google doesn't bring much up.

Sorry for the strange question

Thanks

jimothy

No idea if it works, but the Allen Carr book worked for me, my missus and loads of others. Read it whilst smoking, only stop when he tells you, and by god your last is nasty. Simple brainwashing, but works.

Or just wait until you have a really bad cold and cant physically inhale the smoke without hacking up a lung..... in the end the coughing and making my ribs hurt with the constant coughing made me give up and not looked back.

No smoker wants to hear this, but there really is only one way to stop smoking.

Decide, then stop.

Sounds simple, and it is.

Good luck.

Does anybody know the link between the noise and the feeling of a panic attack

As I sit here, if I think about a cigarette my heart start to race as if I am truly scared?

Seconded. I had already given up when I read it which kinda defeated how it works, that said it has been a good backstop. In my third smoke free month now and loving it biggrinbounce

Do you suffer from panic attacks anyway or is that new?

Best of luck Scott, as you know I had to take two weeks off work to go serious on quitting.

I am in a habit at work, I am looking foward to the weekend to give it a serious go, I am smoking 1 maybe 2 of an evening but during the day I go at alloted times.

Try eating something biggish like a chocolate bar at these times. something to take your mind off.

After week 1 I felt so good about having quit it spurred me on to do week 2 and then that was it. I went into work with my head held high that I could honestly say I've quit. I looked at the comedown as a high in itself as it made me feel strange.

Also I've not been ill since, reckon it's because if your all in a huddle smoking your breathing in all their exhale and if any of them are ill they all catch it. At least this seems to be the case for me.

In my limited, non-clinical understanding (I am a psychologist, but I have nothing to do with all the "sore hair" stuff), panic attacks are just arousal that we associate with a stimulus (open spaces, spiders, going shopping when the F1 is on, etc). It sounds like the sounds induce arousal - plausible to me - and by pairing it with the cigarette, you are being (classically) conditioned to associate arousal (panic) with cigarettes.

I signed up to a scheme arranged by my work. A group or experts will be coming in on 18th March to talk about the different ways you can give up and talk though things like patches, gums, losegers etc. all will be available free including the course so I thought why not. There will me around 5 sessions.

I am an odd smoker. I smoke 1 or 2 before work, by 9am I am at my desk and don't smoke again until I leave the building a 5:45pm then I have one walking to the station and smoke the bulk of my 10 to 15 a day at home.

I read the Allan Carr book and it kind of worked but not long term

This worked for me too! Quit 16th November 2004, and have never looked back. Probably one of the most intelligent decisions of my life, feel truly liberated.

Yep, 3 weeks ago I just decided to stop after 10 years of smoking. I have indeed stopped.

Remember you are the boss of you.

  • having said that I am not anti smoking, I believe in personal chioce and that smoking is nowhere near as bad for you as the govt would have you think, of course the amount of lobbying and tax paid by the nicotine replacement companies would have nothing to do with why the govt is so anti smoking now would it ? oh no ! *
  • Also, dont feel guilty for smoking, the guilt is worse for you that the act of smoking, stress is the bigger killer of the two *
  • I gave up because I didnt feel like it anymore and I got sick of smelling of smoke which to me is the worst aspect of having a smoke*

After I gave up smoking I realised what a bloody awful smell it creates. Never noticed or cared while I did smoke though.
