Hotel and general tips for Dublin?

Hi all, im planing a trip to Dublin for 3 nights over paddys day, can anybody recomend a decent cheapish place to stay? Im looking for a Travelodge type place...
Are there any parts of the city that i should be looking to avoid or areas that are worth paying a premium to stay?
Any other tips would be much appreciated! Iv not been since i was a kiddie!

At this point I would just try and book any hotel that is available. I would steer clear of Temple Bar, personally, but if thats your bag there is http://www.temple-bar-hotels.com/index.php plenty to choose from.
The tourbuses are a good value. Hop on hop off ticket good for 24 hours for about €15.
Count the bullet holes in the O'Connell monument.
Museums are free, but close on Mondays.
Burdock's Fish and Chips. Werburg Street near Christ Church. Get your meal there and walk over to Christ Church and eat it on the park bench next to the church entrance. Nice if it is sunny.
Hostel nearby on Dame Street is a good value. I stayed for a night there in September. €20 including a rudimentary breakfast.

You might struggle for decent choice, and prices will likely be inflated.
Personal tips are the Hilton at either Kilmainham or Charlemont Place (the latter better as it is on the LUAS 2 stops away from St. Stephens Green) but that's probably for around £100 per night.
Jurys Christchurch might be worth a bet as well. Maybe slightly cheaper.
Like others have said, avoid staying in Temple bar. Lovely place to visit, but not to stay I'd reckon - more due to the others that would likely choose to stay there. I live in Dublin and Temple Bar as a place has an undeserved reputation in my opinion. There are some great places to eat, drink and see there and there's always a buzz. Have the chicken wings in Elephant & Castle! Don't spend all day in the tourist trap pubs.
In terms of other things to see, jump on a bus tour as much for the commentary as the sights. Don't bother with the Viking Splash or other Duck type tours. They are limited to a quick five minute dip in one of the dock basins and don't cover half of the city compared to the double decker buses. The zoo is good, but not really London or Whipsnade to be honest. Guinness storehouse is good. Chester Beatty Library if you want some culture and you'll see more impressive illustrated manuscripts than a hour queueing for the Book of Kells in Trinity will get you!
For places to eat, personal favourites include the aforementioned E&C as well as The Port House (Tapas, South William St.) Aya (Sushi, S. William St.) Yamamori (Asian, Gt. Georges St.)
Good bars: Cafe En Seine, Ron Blacks and pretty much anywhere else on Dawson St if you like watching people pretend the credit crunch doesn't exist. Bruxelles if you like things a bit dirtier and with good indie/alternative music. Porterhouse in Temple Bar if you want to hear Irish music but still want to be in a pub which doesn't feel like a cliche.

We went recently and stayed in Holiday Inn city center, although in reality was a 20 min walk away. Some other friends stayed in a hostel in Temple Bar which they found ok and there was a nice enough Jurys Inn near our hotel as well.
One thing, the city is expensive, more so now with the exchange rate. We were paying 6 quid a pint and being paddys day will probably be even more. The offies don't sell booze after 10 either.
Guiness Storehouse is pretty good, and Trinity is worth a quick peek. We were only there for a weekend so didn't see that much, Temple Bar was ok, we also had a good night out in some other area, the name of which escapes me. Sort of on the outskirts of the city center.

The All Ireland Club Hurling and Football Finals are on in Croke Park on St Patricks day, good days entertainment and wont be too costly. Should have a good crowd and you can catch the parade on the way to it. Plenty of decent hotels in Dublin but the prices will have been inflated for the time of year.
I've stayed here whilst visiting customers / partners in Dublin. Basic but functional Travelodge style and price, but there is a bar and I think food till about 9pm. In D4 you are not too far out of the expensive areas where it all happens.

True story. About 15 years ago I stayed at the Shelbourne in Dublin with a colleague.
We were catching the train to Cork at 7.00 the next morning so we met at reception at 6.30. The (elderly) night porter bustled round and said "can I get you a cup of coffee gentlemen".
I said "well, we're catching a train so maybe not.."
He said "ah you have time for a cup of coffee". So I said OK we would.
He disappeared for what seemed like an age and finally came back with a tray of coffee. By this time we were getting quite worried about the train and the time so started to gulp down the coffee.
"And what would you gentlemen be doing today?" he enquired.
"Going to Cork on the train" I said.
"Oh I see" he replied. Would that be the 7 o'clock train?"
"Yes".
Looks at his watch. "Well I think you should get a move on or you'll miss it. You haven't really got time to stand here drinking coffee".

Thanks for all the hotel info, unfortunately the harsh reality of student life kicked in and were staying in a hostel! Not what id planned on but after six months around North and Central America, things can only get better! :-)

If its the hostel I stayed at a few years ago, five mins walk form the town center then its as good a place to sleep as any other, and the breakfasts are great.Thanks for all the hotel info, unfortunately the harsh reality of student life kicked in and were staying in a hostel! Not what id planned on but after six months around North and Central America, things can only get better! :-)
