Speedo

My speedo only works for the first 30-40 miles then it stops, but it never goes eratic. I took the advice from here and got down underneath the car and clean the gap of the sensor. Still no joy, took her to a garage and the garage had a proper clean and even adjust the gap, and again only works for the first 30-40 miles. I noticed that the speedo sometimes gets back to live when there is a relay "tick" noise, but only sometimes!! Any clue from the experts here!?!?

Wierd, have took mine in today for exactly the same problem, not eratic, just stops then re-starts. Picking it back up tomorrow so ill let you know the outcome

Turned out to be the sender unit mounted behind the fuel tank so ball ache of a job. Unit cost £120 so am expecting a bill of around 200 quid all in.

Just went out to get some milk and cheese. Ended up doing 40, 50 odd miles round trip!! My speedometer didn't work at the beginning which was not surprising according to my previous posts above. However, I have been playing around with the display pod and change it to the big rev count number, the needle suddenly come alive and keep on working. Does anyone know why!?!?

Does your digital speedo work when the needle packs up?

My oddly behaving analogue speedo is due to wear on the small plastic gear, sits just behind the speedo itself. Being replaced as we speak.

It shouldn't be the sender unit then as I believe it gives both needle and digital speedo the same input.

My needle and digital speedo were acting up at the same time. Replacing the sender unit fixed both.

I'd suspect something is up with the electronics in the pod. Dry solder joints and loose connections could be the source of problem.

how much of a pig is the sender unit to get at? -I have dead speedo analogue and digital

You can get to it by taking off the N/S rear wheel but it is on the diff. Easy enough to reach, but it has to be set up with feeler gauges and the wiring needs to be sorted. On a ramp easy 1/2 hours work but a bit fiddly on axle stands.

I thought the transducer was the sender unit. Can anyone tell me what the difference is?
