Just watching "WRC on Dave" lol

They've been talking about the extreme temperatures of Norway, sometimes down to -30c, do the cars have heaters? I imagine they strip as much unecessary weight from the cars as possibe which includes heater and plumbing etc, but at some point there must be a benefit on being able to feel your toes and fingers over a 10kg weight penalty? Or do they have electric 12v heaters instead. (Loving Matthew Wilson's heated boots BTW!).

Another Q - when you hear the cars flying past, there's a really high pitched squeaking noise, is this the suspension working or something else? Someone once said it was the diff working but why would it squeak?

Cheers

Iain

I don't believe they have heating, I was watching Norway and you could see some of the drivers breath while driving. But as you say there are surely benefits to having heating, stopping the windows misting up for example.

Sqealing - no idea really, presumably something to do with the transmission.

I can't help with the heater question but the squeaking noise is the turbo wastegate.

Are you sure? Doesn't sound like a turbo related noise, more mechanical.. I mean the chittering type noise rather than the whistle noise

I missed a few minutes of it, but I thought they were showing some electric foot warmers at the start? Or maybe it was my imagination...

Must be wastegate as the rules don't allow dump valves

Anti-lag more of a bang is it not?

its the wastegate, as if you watch incar fottage, everytime they change gear you hear thee thud of the gears + a quick chrip sound.

They don't run heaters. The squeak noise is indeed the wastegate. If it's the same sound i'm thinking, It can probably be best described as the squeaking of the soles of shoes on a polished floor every now and then.

Old School now, but the Rothmans SCRS had electrically heated windscreen, and the heat for addtional defogging was taken from the oil coolerr which was cowl mounted.

I would imagine that the engine and exhaust heat in a WRC car would be enough to stay reasonably warm in most conditions. Windscreens would be electrically heated of course.

They don't run heaters, but believe me they do get warm yes

A few teams considered Air Con for certain rallies, but very few have ever bothered.

Yep, they get bloody warm inside I remember servicing on an event for some guys in a private Mitsi WRC in the middle of summer and literally having to pull them out of the car and peel them out of their racesuits when they returned to service, I've never seen sweat like it! hurl

On the other hand the transmission tunnel/exhaust system kept them reasonably warm in the winter!

The squeaking noise is definately the wastegate chattering away, I really miss the old Escort Cossie's with a proper bang and shot of flame out the back/side when they changed gear. frown

I remember spectating several times on the RAC in North Wales during the early 90's when the anti-lag systems were in their infancy. Way, way louder than a shotgun more like field artillery, a proper BANG. You could here them coming down the stage minutes before you'd see them. If you stood at a hairpin it was just amazing BANG!, flame, BANG!, more flame BANG!

I recon the electronics have reined the anti-lag systems in now, which is a shame.

Yes I do, also its big brother the Delta S4, when they did the RAC.

Could even see its turbo glowing red from the back !

Sort of... you just put through enough to keep to turbo spooling, rather than dumping unmeasured quantities! hehe
