When does being down become depression?

Does anyone just feel down for no reason or is there always a cause behind it that you are aware of?

Discuss?

I had thought i'd had a total sense of humour failure so i was hoping so, but after reading that it brought a smile so maybe a re think is in order.

Before i get accused of all sorts i just thought i'd see what other peoples thoughts where. I didnt want to make a big deal of it if its something that will go away, i've just never felt like this or acted like this before, i feel like i should go to the doc's but for what? because i'm a little un happy at the moment? i hate going at the best of times so i'd rather not waste their time.

When you have thoughts of being worthless and feel theres no point in getting out of bed in the morning. When you don't enjoy activities you normally get pleasure out of (ie hobbies)

Oh yeah, and you feel like killing yourself.

If you feel you should go to the doctors then go. Most people start of with "I don't really feel I should be wasting your time with this, but.....".

They're experts at dealing with this common problem, and they will refer you to someone who WILL help.

I know someone who had depression for years, including the requirement for electric shock therapy to stop their body from just closing down. They made a full recovery. I'm sure you're not at that level, but whatever your level is there's someone who can help. They really can help.

Been there, tried that! As far as I was concerned the visit to the Qwack was a total waste of time.
Try getting together a list of things that you enjoy or give you pleasure, and are practical and doable (this bit is important!) and do them!!

I don't wish to be dismissive, but you didn't have depression. You were probably just bored.

I'm currently on anti depressants due to being on redundancy notice (my partner finished her job on Friday as well after her job was moved) and I would say go and see your doctor and talk to them. They may be able to offer help sessions to talk about whatever is the problem as opposed to giving you drugs.

It also worth speaking to the receptionist as some doctors have more experience on depression than others so are more sympathetic.

It's just something i find really frustrating at the moment, i have no patience at all, i loose my temper at the drop of a hat, i feel like i'm pushing my wife away, she keeps asking me whats up and i have nothing to tell her.

I need to change jobs because i dont get paid enough to live on but i cant motivate myself to sort it out, i wanted to join the army but due to medical "issues" it looks unlikely.

I was supposed to go and see my mother this evening but i just cant face it and i have no idea why.

I dont want to see a doctor for two reasons, i dont like going for a start and i'd feel like i was wasting their time and secondly i dont want to be put on perscription drugs, i dont like the idea of that, what happens when you stop taking them, back to the same old same old....

No, they redress a temporary chemical imbalance. You weren't always depressed, and you won't always be if you get treatment.

The alternative is dark to say the least.

Well, no. If you subscribe to the view that depression is a chemical imbalance in the brain, then the point of the drugs is to help you get in a place where you can pull your thumb out of your arse and resolve what the underlying non-clinical issues may be.
