I have just noticed that the Rear footwell carpet behind the passenger seat is very wet ? Is there anything from the car that could have leaked into that area ? Or could the door have not been closed properly and water run into that area ?

Thanks

I've read about a car with this problem. Chris Harris's E39 on Drivers Republic, just checked the thread and can't see a cause/solution mentioned.

His post of the 14th Nov 08 mentions it:

Have you tried a search on www.m5board.com ?

have you had the windscreen replaced recently? , I had it on my partners old 1 Series they did not seal the window properly and it all built up at the lowest point in the car interior.

Behind the front seats.

No nothing like that....From reading through the m5board pages it would appear that the vapor barrier in the skin of the door is leaking. If i follow this it should be solved..

It will do as long as i disconnet the power and don't blow up the air bag in my face. Any idea on how you get the carpet up ?

Did this work, and was it easy to do? I have this problem on a 530D touring, so would be keen to get a solution, now that monsoon season has arrived.

Hope this works, as I bought some butyl strip and have done one side, so thumbs pressed that we have a dry foot well.

I had it suggested to me to check the drains for the sunroof gutter, assuming the car has one.

As already pointed out it will be the membrane inside the door, when it gets wet it acts like a shower curtain & if (when) the sealer fails at the bottom the water runs out from behind the door card.
As far as the airbag is concerned it wont cause you any problems, just make sure the keys not in it & the ignition isnt turned on while its disconnected otherwise it will flag a fault & need to be reset using diagnostic equipment. The same rule applies if you remaove the seats to get the carpet up.

Fairly simple from what I can remember, as long as you follow the instructions and note where the screws came from. Plenty on mastic and plastic dishes (the different coloured Ikea ones are ideal) and you will be away. Some of the panels need a bit of a pull but you can re-seal with mastic when reassembled
