Mine is a 97 on its original engine with the oil dip stick at the rear and rising in the center at the back of the engine.
I didn't realise there were 2 different 4.2 engines and whats this talk about clatter cams? Perhaps someone could enlighten me as to what the differences are? I assume it is better to have the later variety but beside a mysterious oil leak I will cover in a different thread my engine seems to run very nicely.. not too slow either!
Regards,
Ben

Seeing as I've managed to break two sumps
.....
My old 4.2's got the rear mounted dipstick & has a sump that is peculiar to the mounting position of said dipstick.
FWIW I found taking oil readings off the rear dipstick a lot easier, as the oil tends to drain down.
On the 4.5 with the front mount, the stick would need to be removed for a few hours to get an accurate reading.
For those of you with the rear mounted..... Have you ever tried to replace the stick in the dark ?

I normally check my oil when the car is in my garage, and I have to use a torch to find where the dipstick goes!!
