Online Job Hunters

ok this may not be the best time to think this, given the current situation this country is in, but im at a wits end with my job, and i got to go

I currently work at my local co-op where i've been working there for the last 4 and a half years, but about 6 months ago we got a new manager, and i would like to think myself as a pretty easy going guy and get along with most people, but this man just does my head in, he just keeps moving the goalposts and i just can't seem to do anything right. plus this being my first job from when i turned 16 i think its time to move on

Now i have heard good and bad about these, but thought i would hear your input, what do you all think about these websites where you post your CV and they forward it on to other companys, wondered if any of you got jobs from doing this, and if you could reccomend the best one, or even better suggest a new job, seeing as my qualifications are pretty low, no real college grades, went from secondary school straight to work,


Any serious recomendations considered, cause as i said, i've just had enough at the moment

I've signed up for most of them. They are all useless at finding you sutible jobs when you upload your CV.

I put my CV on monster.co.uk and got a fantastic job through them along with a few other offers. It is well worth it as it is free. But yeah they can come up with some stuff that is totally unsuitable for you as well. But I would definately give it a go.

Yes, in the past I have put my CV on there (sales based) and I have been on the phone ALL day the next day (honestly) and very few decent jobs come out of it. I have had 4 jobs and I have put my CV on these sites each time but I never got a job via them, always via a company website directly.

I had one chap call me today, he was asking what basic I wanted, I said I was open to the roles he had, he said why didn't I think about what I wanted to do and ring him back?!

Problem is with monster, a lot of low level recruiters are looking though it, and the are mostly from what I can tell, throw enough st at a wall some will stick types.

I shan't bother next time, I will scour websites myself.

They are all complete waste of time, particularly at the moment. All they are intertested in is your current details to try to tout for business, they put ficticious jobs on their sites to enmtice you to register, and you will get nothing but useless service from any of the I am afraid.

As an employer, I know we have given up with agencies now and just find our own staff.

Just get out there and look, ask people, friends family etc. Everyone I know who has got a job in thelast 6 months has done it themselves!

Monster, Jobsite, Totaljobs, CWJobs, ITJobs, Fish4Jobs.

They all suck. I haven't had any jobs from them. There always is a call telling me that my 'details will be forwarded mate, i'll get back to you soon'.

They never fking do! They call off of mainly witheld numbers and don't always email you for confirmation/proof of the conversation you're having.

Hays have proven to be quite good with me though.

Depends what you want the best option is apply to the company you want to work in. You are young and got a some good sound reatail experience.

B&Q is a good compnay and going strong and good career prospects.. You can apply at DY.com. Think about the industries. Not all companies do badly in recessions just have a good think about the next couple of years..

yeah i do think a more direct approach to finding a job would be best, best round my area there is mainly retail shop based stuff, and if im honest, i wanna try something else

I worked for TNT logistics for B&Q for 6 years and the B&Q managers all started from ground level. All worked in retail and all had good salaries..Retail is a good industry if you are tough skinned and a hard worked..Also tesco.com and Asda seem to be good business opportunities...

Jobsite, got my last 3 jobs through them.

And they only e-mail you if you set-up specific automated daily job searches. Great site.

OP - take a day off and go in and register with your local agencies, a lot of them will consider people they have 'met' straight away rather than those they have only got Cvs for...

yeah i believe that you do leave a better first impression if you meet them, but as for the day off, i only seem to get one a week and on my spare day off i seem to be busy from early hours to late

thats why i thought this could be the best for me, as i don't really have great amounts of time to job hunt, spose thats why i haven't found one sooner

I used to do that when I was temping, go in and meet them.

Now, I don't, but it does help, if you can.

Just bear in mind that there have been 600+ applicants for jons, so persevere (sp)

I've had 3 jobs now from using jobserve and monster. No time wasters here and would definatly recomend to people.


Guess it depends on your industry/career etc

If you're thinking of carrying on with retail you might just be best to get the local rag and walk into some agencies in town to see what your options are. If you dont have a mortgage then dont write off the temps either. No point commuting 30 miles for a job where the same wages might be available down the road

Look for local based job websites, your local newspaper website and the Job Center website, too.

Don't expect to just put your CV on a job website and have lots of people start clammering for your services. If you want any attention you will have to at least on-line apply for advertised jobs.

It's often better to see the job online and if there's a contact number, ring it and have a chat about it.

I own a recruitment company and we use Monster as our main source for CV’s.

It’s one of the best out there.
