Right, well, since my brother dropped out of uni because he wasn't getting on with the course, he's decided he wants to learn to be a paramedic.
Does anyone have any knowledge of the application procedure, or whats the best way to get into the job currently?
He's planning on doing the C1 licence soon, or at least getting a provisional for it, is this the right way to go, given the cost of the training?

Back to uni for him. Paramedics now are required to have a degree. No longer the case of going in as technition and working way up. Techs are now being forced to convert I think within the next few years.
Take a look at assistent practicionar (sp) roles. Like para but no drugs. In future ever crew will consist of one of these and full paramedic
Hard work long hours. My mrs is looking to get into it also
C1 is pre req if not got already. Although they will consider with a provisional, but will need full licence if offered employment. Costs about 800

Ambulance Care Assistant (transport and such) can be the first rung on the ladder.. there's also Emergency Care Assistant IIRC. I think London ambulance service do a student paramedic entry option but I'm not sure.
I'm going to wait for the morning shift and some of the paramedic chaps.

Have your brother have a look at the websites of the local univercities so see if they run a Paramedic science or emergency medical care degree.
Or just have him pop in at one of the local ambulance's station as stuff (training) is really changing at the moment at is it really area depentdent, all the 12 trusts seem to be approaching it differenty. Some are already employing care assistents, some still want nothing to do with that, some are still doing IHCD tech courses (like the one i work for) but most are now fadding into the SAP (student ambulance paramedic) route, which goes via univercity.
don't think YAS is currently recruiting for SPARAs (if the next intake is April then fair enough but I'm not sure about that) - but they are recruiting ECAs/Assistant Practitoners if your brother is interested or desperate to get on board immediately; http://www.yas.nhs.uk/WorkingforYAS/currentvacanci... YAS differs from the other Trusts in this regard as this role has been matched to AFC Band 4 as compared to Band 3 elsewhere in the country. It's not ideal but does provide a possible stepping stone to get on board as a SPARA for future intakes.
(The introduction of the ECA/AP is controversial as it's a cheap and ultimately ineffectual way of filling a double-manned ambulance that should be crewed by a Para and a Tech. and something that we're vehemently opposed to. However, that's not the fault of the people performing the role)
Personally, I wouldn't touch the ECA/AP role with a bargepole and would wait for the next SPARA intake even if he has to wait a while (if he's not bothered about it being exclusively Yorkshire he shouldn't have to look too hard or wait too long)

That's good news then -I'm certainly not complaining if they are still recruiting for student paras-The more of them and the less APs the better. TBH I'm really hoping the AP/ECA idea dies on its arse (initial feasibility studies have already suggested the role within A&E is untenable) and all it takes is one serious multiple casualty incident to prove what a ridiculous idea it is......I think she has also applied for AP and A&E SA job also as she wants in by any way she can!
Anyway, good luck to wife (and hch's brother) -(almost) without exception, the SParas I've encountered in YAS are good sorts, of high calibre - and seem to be enjoying it!

Friend applied and was accepted for testing, this is 10 years ago, mind!
First test was a driving test. She was put in an ambulance and told to drive - no coaching was given. She had a licence, but no car and had never driven anything that large.
She failed and was asked to come back once she had some experience.
