How come the torch can be used to "paint" if there is no medium? As there is no backdrop, what is it that makes the beam stop where it does and get picked up by the camera?
Surely it should just diffuse into the background as it appears to when you look at it directly and not on a photo?

Very long exposures.
Dean Chamberlain used exposures of several hours on his early work. And it was used in video as well - Durans All She Wants video made extensive usage of this technique.

There is medium - the film or optical sensor. The light is pointed at the camera, not away from it. Long exposure, smallish aperture and a light source can be lots of fun.Surely it should just diffuse into the background as it appears to when you look at it directly and not on a photo?

The torch is shining towards the camera...Surely it should just diffuse into the background as it appears to when you look at it directly and not on a photo?

Its the same as when you move a sparkler really quickly. The lines arent the beam of the torch, they are the position the torch has been held in. He simply sweeps the torch like a brush and the camera picks it up.Surely it should just diffuse into the background as it appears to when you look at it directly and not on a photo?

Anyone know where I can get prints of these? (or maybe very high res versions)?
I wouldn't say they merit a place in the national papers, there are plenty of similar works on the photography forum here.
The camera won't pick up the light painter as it's too dark, unless you were to stand there long enough for it to pick you up, or were to somehow light yourself up with the torch beam then it simply doesn't register you being there, so by not standing in the same place for too long it registers the scene without you being there, obviously the torch is more intense and it burns into the image much quicker.
One of my first attempts:

And I'm sure he won't mind me posting it, but AndWhyNot on here has done some great night shots:
