Anyone done these? Apparently they're the fourth and fifth twistiest roads in the UK...

Doen them both, the A466 loads of times, often going down to Severn Bridge.

Watch out for sightseers on the A466 though - lots of visitors down to Tintern Abbey. I often stop at the old station in Tintern for a sticky bun and coffee.
Nice road surface under the trees before you cross the river going south ...but from then on it used to be a bit rutted and subsided in places....unless they've re-surfaced it recently.

Nice drives if you're heading down there - go steady smile

Overhanging trees on the A466 make overtaking hazardous as cars can be lost in the shaded areas. Much worse after the bridge half way and heading up to Monmouth.

It's not one of my favourite roads TBH, unless very early AM and empty.

Interesting, thanks. The idea is to use it as a cut through from the M4 to Mamhilad (near Usk). It'll be dark by then so taking it gently if I'm in the TVR (with its horrendous headlights), but just sounded more fun than continuing the M4.

The next morning I have to get down to Llandow, so I was toying with the idea of taking the A4061, but it now looks like I'm going to be a bit pushed for time, so I'll probably cheat and take the M4 again!

The idea after that is to hit the Brecon Beacons!

Aha, the better road is the B4235 from Chepstow.

Lovely road, twisty but fun and doable in the ark at a moderate pace if your lighting is pants. Have spent years up and down that road on bikes and in cars.

Will take you to Usk nicely. Lots of fun to be had rolling on and off the throttle in low gears or just bumbling along.

Welshie mappy bit

bow

That was phenomenal. Did it in the daylight on the way back in the end [rather than the way through] and it was superb. Had possibly my all time favourite drive chasing a bike down there - lost him to start with then caught up on the twistier (almost alpine) bit at the bottom. Great stuff!

Glad you had fun smile The 90 degree bends at the bottom end can be a bit hairy on a bike if you're not aware and very confident biggrin

For a real driving road and one which is used by BiB for driver training give the B4521 Old Ross Road from Abergavenny to Skenfrith and Broad Oak a go. Then drop down the A466 to Monmouth and chill out down the Wye Valley.

It's a fabulous stretch which rewards correct observation and cornering. Another one for lower gears and rolling on and off the throttle - much of it can be driven with no brakes, just being smooth and reading it.

The bends and crests are great. It's one of my favourite routes for teaching people how to read the road and learn limit points.

Enjoy!

racecourse garage to the bridge inn LLangwm, 6 minutes, challenge anyone to beat it biggrin I've done it in many cars over the past 15 years, weapon of choice for this speed, 420 bhp Audi RS4 Avant. Even the Griff 500 couldnt touch it on this route (with me driving anyway)
