Have a guy currently working for us (lets call him Adam) on a 6 month contract which ends in a few weeks. We're busy enough to keep him on but have been erring as he's high maintenance - runs late, takes short notice holiday etc. We've had words about this and he's always contrite and promises not to do it again.

Last thursday afternoon he disappeared, guys on the shop floor said Adam had said he'd booked half day holiday. Challenged him Friday morning and he said the floor manager had approved it on Tuesday, can't check with floor manager as he's off sick (but I don't believe it to be true anyway) so tell him that any holiday has to be approved by me now.

So where is he this afternoon? Not at work, a trustworthy source on the shop floor said Adam was talking about taking his Mum to hospital so had half day holiday booked. He's put a half day down on the holiday chart downstairs but I don't recall approving anything.....

I'm still deciding whether to give him a written warning or a P45...but he's been pretty stupid acting like this in this climate.

Well I now think it's gross misconduct - he's disobeyed a direct instruction from a superior, he's off-site without permission or notification (he's not called anyone) and he's falsely filled in a holiday chart....

whats the issue with short notice holiday.... it's his holiday he can take it when he wants ?

then again he is either needed or he is not, if you can survive without him there then ask your self a question

Is he any good at his job?

If he is, it would be a shame to chuck him out in this present climate. I've found that having a chat (verbal warning if you like wink) bucks up their ideas pretty quickly.

Make it clear to him that the ball is very much in his court as if he keeps playing these games then he'll be out of the door.

Edited to add - If he is just a lazy piss taker, kick him out. smile

Plenty of good people looking for work at the moment. Unless the training period is substantial, I'd be filling my business with people who mean business without a second thought.

Finish him at the end of his contract with the appropriate notice. Tel him if he messes about during his run-out, his reference will declare such accordingly.

Sounds like Adum to me hehe

ETA:

Just call him in for a chat about his mum - you'll know if he's swinging the lead or not.

It could be. BUT, he may have told his manager? Until you have spoken to the manager you don't have this option?

You COULD ask him to attend a meeting without coffee, advising him that you believe he has done the above and you will have his manager in the meeting, at which point he will be sacked for gross misconduct if you are correct.

Having told him last Friday morning that he has to request all holiday directly with me he shouldn't be talking to the floor manager anyway!

It's not a very skilled manual job he's doing and training period isn't very long. Are we busy? Yes. Do we need him in particular? No, can easily find someone else. Oh and I forgot to mention in original post that he's not worked a full week this year with short notice holiday (which we stopped him doing) and sick leave....now where did i put those P45 forms??

Hope he is, he'll be needing a new job soon!

Not happy about just letting his contract expire - sends message to other people that we tolerate this sort of thing which we don't.

Of course he's allowed to take holiday if he asks permission, can't just walk out when he feels like it, particularly after being warned about this before. And why should I phone him? If he needs to be somewhere else than where he's supposed to be he should ask/tell first - if he'd have said he needed to go to take his Mother to hospital then I wouldn't have said anything other than "hope she's okay and off you go".

Personally if i'd warned him previously and then less than a week later he was up to the same tricks i'd be handing him a p45, its just plain disrespectful imo.

Leave my lovely little boy alone you bully.

We're taking you to an employment tribunal; harassing my son just because he has to occasionally go to equality classes under the pretence of taking me to the hospital.

what is the notice period and the procedure for getting holiday? do you have a company policy on notice period and approval? if so you cant change it, if he plays by the rules its tuff titty. you cant change to who he reports a holiday to at your whim with out him agreeing to it. Its you floor manager/acting floor manager thats not doing the managing, put your boot up his/her/its arse!

Out of interest who are you in this story? Adam is the new guy and there is a floor manager and you mention your Adam's superior and you want to approve his holiday over the floor manager. I just cant work out where you fit in?

If your another worker below the floor manager I cant see its your place to be approving anything, so if I was adam I'd probably ignore you. If your above the floor manager asking to have aproval direct from adam undermines the floor manager.

I guess if you have the P45's your above the floor manager in which case I would check with him and make him deal with it if it's part of his role to manage the holiday. I would give the floor manager clear direction on how you want things to be done and just let him do his job. I would also have a word with this adam to check his story and see if there is any middle ground that the company and him could take to avoid leaving the company in the lurch but help adam if he needs to be somewhere.

Sory if ts all been covered but I read through a couple of times and couldn't find more of an explaination of the structure.
