Miles out of a set of tyres?
Discussion
Two questions for you all:
1) What's the highest number of miles you've got out of a set of tyres on your Elise?
2) Do you think after 27k miles and five years I should replace my tyres for safety reasons? In my ownership (3 years) the car's been driven briskly on B and C roads as a daily driver, on two trips to the Nurburgring and on one full day open pit track day. I'm amazed that the tyres still have 3.5mm on the front and 4.5mm on the rear left!?!

1) I think maybe 15K miles on original fronts when I was using it as a daily car
2) yes - 5 year old rubber will have gone well off and be a liability ...then when you fit brand X tyres as new replacements you can proclaim how brilliant they are ...when in reality, the ones you took off were so poor, youd just accepted thats how the car handled, and just about anything new would have been an improvement

I had Dunlop SP9000 on my S1 135. I did 18000 miles before selling the car and they still had 3mm left, and I'd done 5 track days.
On my Europa the Goodyear F1s have done 9000 miles and the fronts are lnot even half worn, the rears have over3mm, so I'm expecting around 18000 miles from them too

I put new A048's on the rear of my Exige S, 3000 miles ago and they are on the wear markers now.
The fronts are also on the markers, but they were on the car when I bought it (don't know what they had already done?) - 6000 miles ago.
All 6000 miles have been road use only.
As mentioned in another thread, I am expecting to fit T1-R's this afternoon and should they not prove to be the horrible, wobbly jelly moulds I am expecting (and I keep them on), I am hoping this may push up towards the 10,000 mile mark for the rears?
Part of my reasoning behind switching to the Lotus was to keep the costs down!

That be the Bridgestone' I guess.
My mate had a set on an Imprezza and lasted about 30K inc some ring laps. Mind you after 30K they were down to the tread.
Time for you to get a new set I would say, I have YOK AD07's lasted 15K on the rear and well at 17K at fronts are ok.

Again would not be surprised on Bridgestones as they are tough as nails,
Its pretty good going, another Eco point for the Elise!

Please dont laugh, I am a driving whimp, who has not taken the 111R I've owned for 4yrs anywhere near a track
Rear = 22K miles
Fronts = 30K still the originals(And yes I know I need to replace them soon)

I think a lot of this depends on your driving style. I haven't owned mine long enough to know about tyre wear, but if you tend to adopt a "slow in, fast out" approach, you can make fronts last for some time. My dad saw 40,000 miles out of a pair of fronts on an E46 M3. Rears more like 10,000 though...

Correct, Bridgestones. Sticking with them purely because the expense of changing all 4 at the same time, when 2 dont actually need changing, I cant/wont justify. Its pretty good going, another Eco point for the Elise!

That's what I was intending to get fitted, but after 3 weeks waiting, Toyo don't seem to be able to deliver 888's (in my area at least), hence the T1-R's.
Tried Camskill? 125 quid each for rears last time I checked.
You need to make a judgement on the tyres as to how the perform and check them visually (you should be doing this anyway). There's no point replacing them because consensus on the internet said so, new tyres will always feel that bit better but that doesn't mean older ones are unsafe. I read some advice from a tyre manufacturer/agent in one of the MSA rags that said tyres over 10 years old (think the context was classic racing) should be thoroughly inspected before use.
You also need to look up "brisk" in the dictionary

Tyres go hard and then simply don't wear out. I have never worn a set of fronts to the markers - they run out of grip long before that creating serious understeer and massively increasing braking distance.
Personally I would get a new set - the difference in grip will be huge. Try the Yoko AD07's.

I have just had fitted my second set of Yoko AD07's (£488 Westovers)and the difference is massive compared to my last set which were down to the wear indicators all round!!! I will definitely change them earlier next time. As I have an early S2 I started with Bridgestones, but can definitely say the Yoko AD07's are better. Both makes last approximately 18K for the fronts and 10K for the rears. I use mine every day and for the occasional track day.
