Purely speculative at the moment, but how much can I expect to pay for a PAS Rack s/h?

I see that they are £530 New from TVR Gear.

Is it a bespoke rack, if not where's it sourced from?

See my topic on www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?f=8&h=&t=46093

If you have a rack it can be refurbished as Andy at APM has the parts, or could get hold of them.

Don't know how much a new rack could be but I think Rivergirrl had one fitted, so she might know

Thanks Pal, but I'm contemplating retro fitting a PAS rack.

I love my 500, the steering is fantastic at anything above walking pace, but parking is a PITA.

It's a TVR part IIRC, try douglas valley breakers or similar

They're £700 (again IIRC) from TVR, pump is the sandard Range Rover item I beleive

I've contacted Douglas Valley and they have all the bits other than the rack itself, hense this posting.

What happened to parts from breakers being 1/3 the cost of new as a rule of thumb, or am I showing my age?

No Tim, but you are thinking Ford and Vauxhall - not TVR!

TT Tim, I'm also retro fitting PAS to my Griff. I was after a rack for two months, now I've got two and am working on getting a third. Keep digging and eventually you'll find one. The costs can be kept down if you try really hard and try and source as much of the parts yourself. So far mine owes me £260 and like I said, I've got two racks (one slightly damaged) and a pump, which are the most expensive parts. If and when I get the other rack repaired I will be selling it on, so if you're interested, drop me a line in a month or so.

The rack is an exclusive TVR item and will cost you £700 for the priveledge, what is the problem with your rack, I had mine rebuilt about 2 years ago at a cost of about £200 (I removed it myself mind you) don't throw your money around just yet!

STEERING RACK....I've a 96 Chimaera with PAS that's just failed the MOT due to split gaiters....I'm assuming that my existing steering rack is fixable with the right bits...Where can I get the right bits??..David Gerald quoted £800 for a new rack & £300 for a reconditioned one (if they could get hold of one)....Any help appreciated I use the car every day...Cheers...MIKE B

Universal bits of rubber bellows as any garage will supply/fit, doubt it has to be TVR !! Your only additional cost maybe re-tracking since the ball joint will be separated before rubber bellow replaced - an accomplished fitter should check tracking afterwards - mind, some dont !!

However comma, if bellows split for some time and you've now ruined inner ball-joint/rack, then disregard my message above.........!!

Happy motoring and fingers crossed for you.

GOOD NEWS!...Having searched the world of PAS steering racks I've found that Tower View will remove, send off & refit existing rack for £469 + VAT (£255 recondition, £165 labour, £46.80 pair new track rod ends, £2.90 fluid) with approx 24 hr turnaround...OR.....visit www.auto-steer.co.uk....Really helpful guy named Mike....£145 (no VAT!)..£20 DHL courier..24 hr turnaround. You'll have to organise the removal & refitting though..Sounds like a result!...MIKE B

I used Power Steering Services (www.power-steering.co.uk) in Greenwich to recon my Chimaera PAS rack. The cost was about £150 with collection and delivery.

Removal is not easy - took me about 5 hours - but I could do it much quicker next time.
Tips:
Removing the bonnet, radiator and front grill helps
Undo the anti-roll bar to get the rack out between the wishbones.
Mark the position of the steering column to rack splines carefully or you'll have to use trial and error to get the rack centred and teh wheel straight.

On another note.. I have read that the early Griffith used a Rover steering rack, not a TVR one!
