How can watch some films many times, and not get bored?
Discussion
There are certain films, it doesn't matter which they are, that I have in my permanent library, and which I have already watched at least a dozen times, and am sure I will watch them many times more. It doesn't seem to matter that I know the contents of every scene, that there are no surprises waiting for me.
My best theory is that the film creates an alternative reality, and with the films I like, I enjoy being in that reality. I'd be interested to hear other theories, I'm sure many other people have films they watch over and over.

Out of interest what films are you talking about as your number ones?
Since you ask, although I don't want to turn it into a favourite film threadRemains of the Day
Excalibur
Topsy-Turvy
Dances WIth Wolves
Groundhog Day
OHMSS
Galaxy Quest
would be the ones that come to mind first
It is odd. The vast majority of films will bore me a second time and once is easily enough, even if i enjoyed it.
But you are right about the fact that there are a select few you can watch over and over. I have seen "The shawshank redemption" probably 10 times but still end up watching it once every year. I watched "The great escape" twice in a week because a friend said she had never seen it and I had no problems watching it again.
what makes those select few different from other films?

You have probably just seen it once, it just feels like more.It is strange, like you say, almost a separate reality!
I tend not to watch those films intently, just in the background.
list includes
Goodfellers
Starwars
Legends of the Fall
White Squall
Dog Soldiers
Great Escape
Battle of Britain
Reach For the Sky.
I guess they are what I would consider "Classics", non of the dross that Hollywood seems to make now a days seem to compare!

Films which I could watch over and over
Ghostbusters
300
Starship Troopers
Independence Day
Dawn of the Dead (both versions)
Cloverfield
Spinal Tap
Life of Brian & Holy Grail
Aliens
Terminator
All the Star Wars films
Note that this isn't a list of my greatest films. For example films such as Goodfellas, Pulp Fiction or Saving Private Ryan would feature, but I just find they're too heavy for repeated viewing
