Strange running turbo

Just bought a 3r. It seems to be fine apart from the turbo seems to be cutting out and in if I put the pedal down. It's ok again after a few attempts. It does this in all the gears. I noticed it more when I'm in 6th at about 70. If I put the foot down the turbo seems to judder. I have been assured this will be fixed for me but I was hoping it would be something simple. Does anyone have any ideas what it could be? Anyone had anything similar?

you could be overboosting and the car is shutting down

or there could be something else wrong like overfuelling, or a pipe has come loose

where are you in the country ?

It's definitely shutting down and it spools up again by itself. It only seems to go just above 0.5 bar though so I didn't think that would be enough to overboost? I'm in Aberdeen

watch the boost gauge as it looses power - what happens ?

does it drive nicely at part throttle ?

is it a 2.5 or 3.0

It drops. The car drives perfectly in everything else. It's a 3.0 3r

Was out again today and I made a mistake when I said the boost gauge drops.it stays at just above 0.5bar oscillates with the turbo stuttering. Car seems to be fine if I take it up gentler to about 4000 rpm then put the foot down. When I wait till 4000 rpm then floor it I get an initial surge, then turbo shuts down then opens again almost immediately and is fine in the following gear if I'm still accelerating.

From memory if the solenoid on the back of inlet manifold is not working correctly you cant make more that .5 bar on a 3 or 3R, has someone been working on it and swapped the connectors over between the solenoid valve and the inlet temp sensor just in front of the throttle body, also worth checking all of the vacuum pipes two and from the turbo's. A quick way to check this would be to disconnect the solenoid, drive the car and see if it is any different, if it's the same hey presto.

Any ideas where I could get a pic of the engine with the main bits labelled? I'm no fool but had a look under today and realized I never really knew anything!

Classic signs of a turbo bearing failing, its the impellor rattling on the housing & stopping. Pop an inlet hose off (with engine off) and feel is there is much play in the bearing. It should move a tiny amount not wobble about.

I can hear a bearing making a fair noise actually I just presumed it was a wheel as it's worse when I turn right and going slow (maybe just because I can hear it?)

It's not this. There are 2 turbo's anyway.....

Sounds like a case of RobP-itis - fuel starvation. For him, it turned out to be the feed hose to the fuel pump collapsing. Check feed hose AND filter before the pump to make sure that the fuel is getting through.

That sounds like compressor surge to me. have a look at the wastegate actuators and make sure they're opening, also check that the boost control solenoid is connected and working correctly?

I've been told it could be the ignition coils misfiring when under load. I've booked it in to the ford garage to use thief diagnostic computer. What you guys think? I've got john Muir of Dunfermline calling me back this afternoon too.

Wasnt being rude, but it would be something new if a ford dealer could fix a noble, or would even touch it, however we did manage to get a ford dealer in Denmark to plug into a GT
