Has anyone noticed the description for gearbox removal in the TVR S series Second edition Steve Heath (The Bible) on page 191 it say's You may be able to get away with leaving the gearbox joined to the bell housing but this also increases the weight, it then say's unbolt the gearbox from the bell housing and slide the assembly rearwards then unbolt the bell housing from the engine and remove the housing!! how can you unbolt the gearbox from the bell housing without removing the bell housing first as the 4 bolts that hold the gearbox to the bell housing are accessed from inside the bell housing or am I miss reading this?
My gearbox is wet with oil, not sure where it's coming from but assume it is a seal within the gearbox.

It may well be the sump leaking - its a wind tunnel under there when you are travelling and any leaking sump oil goes for miles!

The bible is wrong and you are correct here. Also the bit about withdrawing the gearbox backwards etc is only applicable to S3 on, as to remove the gearbox on an S1 or 2 you need to take the engine out unless the chassis has been modified to incorporate the removable section under the gearbox mount as per S3 on.

I took mine out (S3) and it is all on my site www.gbsportscar.com if you want to look at it. Also I would doubt that the leak is from the gearbox as the only areas it can leak from are the very top - access plate, the front seal (which you'll see coz the clutch will slip very quickly from oil contamination), the rear seal, or the flange in the centre all of which will be fairly obvious. I agree with the others likely to be engine oil blown through the wind tunnel.

I HAD A BAD OIL LEAK AROUND THE BELLHOUSING GEARBOX AREA IT TURN OUT TO BE THE REAR ENGINE CRANKSHAFT OIL SEAL.

Also worth checking it isn't as simple as the rocker covers leaking & running down the back of the engine.

This one will give the same symptoms as a gearbox front seal leak - i.e. slipping clutch due to oil contamination unless you are lucky and catch it really early. Although I believe if there is a leak into the bellhousing it is more likely to be this seal than the gearbox one.

I will have a good look next weekend and see if I can spot a leak from the engine first, if it looks like the gearbox area then as long as the clutch is not slipping I might leave it for now, I will make sure all oil levels are correct.

You can usually tell the difference between engine and gear oil from the smell of it....or have I been spending too long underneath leaky cars? Just sniff a new tin of each and you'll know what I mean. It might help identify where the leak is coming from.

agree with wot Tant said - gear oil really stinks if your box has been filled with the right stuff - I know I got my chest covered in it when removing the gearbox from mine. The rugby top still stinks of it after multiple washes and 9 months

Great minds must think alike as this is what I had planned for next weekend, get it up on ramps look for any obvious leaks from the engine then do the sniff test.
