Hi all, had an odd one last night any ideas?

Had a twenty min run out and stoped off at Tescows to get some beer, all fine, returned to car after 15 mins and didnt want to start much but fired up after heavy cranking. Run like a pig totally misfires etc tried to run drive see if it cleared and wasnt having any of it so pulled up she stalled and i popped the bonnet to see tha main cat glowing nice and red! Precats have been removed. I can only assume this was because of unburnt fuel fromthe misfires. Any how called RAC he came out 30 mins later say not a lot he can do but fire it up anyhow everything running fine! Took it easy on way hoome but no reoccurance. It appers to be ok if i restart almost immediatly ie at petrol station or if left for 30 mins or so to cool down but if i stop her and go back in 10-15 mins shes a pig to start and missfires etc any ideas why ?

TIA

Tim

Glowing cat would be caused by the misfire. The more this happens the less likely it will be working well enough to get you through the next MOT so don't be surprised if you need to replace the cat at some point.

The most likely cause is an ignition fault aggravated by heat soak. You can trace this down to individual cylinders by monitoring the exhaust header temperatures, but since the HT components are all service items I'd suggest you work through replacing the extenders, HT leads, rotor arm, dizzy cap, ignition module and coil until you cure the problem. Best case it needed replacing anyway, worst case it doesn't cure the problem but you now know it isn't an ignition problem and you have a set of spares ready for the next service.
