MP3 -> FM Wireless Adaptors & Stereo Changes
Discussion
Dear All,
Until I change stereos I'm considering one of these:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/RYOTECH-Wireless-Modulator...
Has anyone experience of one or a similar device?
My particular use is for playing back a radio programme which I have previously recorded/encoded. Thus the "track" will be very long. My quick research suggests the devices don't remember where they were within a track when last used.
Can anyone confirm this, please?
I know I can split a programme up into "tracks" but this takes a lot of time at the keyboard
I'm anticipating a fair while till I change the stereo as I want a single DIN unit and adaptors for these are only available from Australia or the USA (unless you know different). I don't need DVD playing screens or SATNAV features, oh and the £750 price tag that comes with them. The cheaper double DIN units which are just radio/CD players appear to be sized for the sake of it and of lower quality.
I've had a look through the stereo-changing FAQs and they look excellent, extremely well done the contributors of these - each screw on the door panels highlighted for example. I'm hoping that even a ham fisted hacker such as myself can follow the instructions,
regards,
Jet

I have one of these - not very good, it wasn't expensive so there was no big risk. I don't use it often and am not sure if I've chosen the best FM frequency to avoid other stations and interference.

If you're looking for non DVD double din head unit with USB connection try this. I fitted one six months ago and works well. The only glitch is that you'll need an aftermarket kit to connect it to the steering wheel controls. I paid about £220 for the head unit and about £15 for the connecter kit.

Dear All,
thanks for the pointers. My preferred media is a USB stick, I don't have an MP3 player. I didn't know the stereo had a Bluetooth "input".
I was aware of the Pioneer stereo. I had subconsciously sidelined it as it had far more features than I need. I have also yet to check whether it has LW. Did you change the speakers at the same time?
Yes, I'm a perfectionist (or hard to please depending on your PoV
)

Dear rickf_uk,
thanks for the link. I've had a look at the manual (home computer can't see pdfs, but that's another story) and that Pioneer unit does have LW...
.../yoda tempted I am yoda/
What adaptor(s) did you buy?
Anything for the basic harness?
You say there's something specifically for the steering wheel controls, may I ask what adaptor you used, please?
Double DIN plate, I see you can get these in the UK?
Also did you change the speakers and if so what for?
regards,
Jet

i fitted one of these works perfectly with the ipod and the phone really clear and it has its own amp to give a little more umphHi Jet,
RE the Panasonic. To be honest I didn't fit it but the guy who did had no problems getting it to fit in the existing hole with just the bits supplied. So far as the steering wheel controls they came from
www.peripheralelectronics.com.
They're really for the pontiac GTO and you should be able to get them on ebay. Can't vouch for how well it works as before seeing you're post i'd put it in a draw and forgotten about it!
The speakers are still standard. They're OK but nothing special. When I upgrade them I'll probably go for panasonics' or JBL as I've had the latter before and they're good value for money.
Now one word of warning. The reception with FM and LW is great, however the reception with AM is somewhere between abysmal and non existant. I understand this is more to do with the Monaro's dual ariel setup than the radio unit itself and it's an issue I'd be glad to hear from anyone out there about. If you can live without the whining on talk sport it's not a problem.
Regards
Rick

Hi Jet,
While I think about I should also mention the user manual. We're all used to getting a booklet the size of a telephone directory in every language from Azerbaijani to Zambian only to find four pages in english. This is not the case with here. I printed the PDF out with two sheets per page and still used 40 sheets of A4! Complicated? On a scale between a tin opener and a large hadron collider finding radio 1 or a Higgs bossun are about the same chance. Still if you persevere it comes together in the end.

Dear rickf_uk,
thanks for the dialogue.
It's always so good to know someone else has been successful. Interesting to note that I don't need an additional mounting kit e.g. http://www.caraudiodirect.co.uk/advanced_search_re...
MW is the least played of my sources so if one has to be poor then that'a a perfect fit - at least as long as the BBC has test cricket
So the Pioneer is stable with the existng 2ohm speakers? That potential issue was my prime reason for doing them at the same time. Looking in the GTO forum suggests that finding replacements is tricky for the front doors especially - they are very shallow and more powerful speakers are generally deeper,

Jet

Dear All,
holy thread resurrection etc...
...I've started installing the head unit today. It's taken me this afternoon and I'm not finished yet
Just getting the old one out was tough without the tools. I gave up at one point and ordered some from evilbay. I tried again later having calmed down and out it came. Anyone want some tools, BNIB
?
Managed to get the old cage out too without taking the centre console panels off.
Anyway to the point:
I connected the Pioneer unit using the ISO connectors supplied and the rear shelf speakers (and I therefore assume the boot amp.) don't work. Is there some connection I need to make to the ISO connectors explicitly for these? Maybe a power enable?
I've spent an age digging through the FAQs, LS1GTO and other fora but no joy.
Also any idea what the "third" longer, thinner, ISO connector is for?
The Pioneer only has connections for two.
Off for bath, wine and dinner
now. I'l have another go tomorrow,
Regards,
Jet

i have successfully replaced mine and it was a interesting job but reasonable straight forward.
the thin iso connector as you called it is the connections for the stearing wheel remote control. which is not interfaceable with out a pac jack. see FAQ's (not brought mine yet)
and as far as the rear shelf "subs" go they are hard wired into the wiring loom so as long as you have your speakers connected firmly into the iso block they should work. you may need to turn the amp up in the boot. ask if you don't know how.
i would strongly advise you change the speakers as well though. as the factory ones in the car are rated at 2 ohms and a standard after market head unit is rated for 4 ohm speakers and running the miss match can cause damage to the unit. plus you will now notice they are not as good.
drop me a line if you get stuck of have questions.

Getting replacement speakers is easy i have even replaced mine with 17cm door speakers and everything clears fine. need to get some adaptor plates though. as far as MW reception goes mine is ok works fine for me. just depends on what Ariel you plug in lol. (check the FAQ)thanks for the dialogue.

Dear All,
I wish it was straightforward
It's in and tidy but no rear shelf speakers
Does anyone have access to a wiring diagram that I may reference, please? I am a sparks so can under stand such things well.
I've searched for the Blaupunkt part no. and type but there doesn't seem to be any manuals/diagrams online for that either.
Looking on the old stereo there are three non-standard connections on the ISO power plug:
pin 1 UART, pin 2 BATT CONT., pin 3 TEL-MUTE
I imagine I don't need to worry about pin 1 or pin 3 but what is pin 2?
It isn't the permanent or switched power, they are catered for by ACC+ and BATT+.
regards,
Jet

only saying as there is nothing that should stop the rear speakers from working as they are a direct splice from the rear door cards.
i do have a wiring diagram some where ill find it for you.

Dear the_ferret82,
no, I haven't checked any fuses yet. The parcelshelf speakers were working before the change so I don't know how I might have blown something. Nonetheless I'll check, sillier things have happened, especially when I work on stuff
How does the boot amp "know" when to be powered? It must be switched by something. Maybe on whenever the switched power is there.
Many thanks for the dialogue,

Jet
